From Generation to Authentication: First Workshop on Trustworthy Face Avatars
(TrustFA 2026)
20th IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition
25 - 29 May 2026, Kyoto, Japan
Workshop Motivation
The field of face recognition is rapidly evolving, with 2D/3D head avatars emerging as a new paradigm, where users can create and manipulate digital representations of themselves to explore new forms of avatar-mediated interaction and identity presence, opening up new challenges and opportunities. This workshop aims to advance the state of the art in face avatar technology. Across telepresence platforms in medicine, education, entertainment, etc., 2D/3D photorealistic face avatars are quickly becoming an appealing interface. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure seamless, secure interactions in these emerging contexts.
This workshop will foster collaboration among researchers interested in advancing avatar generation and authentication technology, encouraging insights and new research that address challenges such as real-time avatar generation, accurate expression retargeting, and behavioral biometrics authentication.
Scope and topics:
The TrustFA workshop provides a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to the advancement of avatar technologies and welcomes submissions in the following areas, including but not limited to:
Avatar generation, manipulation, and motion transfer: 2D/3D head avatars; neural rendering (NeRFs, Gaussian splatting); audio-driven animation; controllability; identity/pose disentanglement; speed/quality trade-offs; pose/expression tracking fidelity; identity preservation, visual realism/temporal quality.
Avatar authentication: impersonation detection; appearance-agnostic driver verification; avatar template access authorization (is the driver authorized to manipulate a certain avatar template); behavior-based signatures; passive vs. active (watermark) safeguards; robustness under codec/bitrate/lighting shifts; cross-generator generalization; Presentation & replay attacks.
Privacy, safety, and governance: consent management, rights to likeness, watermarking, and provenance, on-device versus cloud trade-offs, and demographic fairness in capture and synthesis, unequal detectability, identity binding evidence, template protection.
Real-time tracking and control: expression retargeting, audio-driven facial animation, gaze and head pose stabilization, temporally coherent rendering under resource constraints.
Evaluation and datasets: protocols for realism, identity fidelity, latency/compute, and human-perceived presence; synthetic-to-real generalization; data documentation standards.
Applications and user studies: telepresence in healthcare and education, accessibility, entertainment tools, and AR/VR integration.
