Special Weapons & Tactics  

The purpose of the LAPD SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team is to provide a specialized and highly trained unit capable of handling high-risk and dangerous situations that go beyond the capabilities of regular police officers. The primary role of the LAPD SWAT team is to respond to critical incidents where there is a heightened threat level, such as:

• Hostage Rescue: When individuals are taken hostage, often in situations involving armed suspects barricaded in a location.

• Armed Standoffs: Dealing with armed individuals who have barricaded themselves and may pose a threat to public safety.

• High-Risk Arrests: Apprehending suspects who are considered extremely dangerous and could potentially be armed and violent.

• Counter-Terrorism: Responding to terrorist threats or incidents that require specialized tactics and equipment.

• Active Shooter Situations: Addressing scenarios where a person or group is actively engaged in shooting with intent to cause harm.

• Dignitary Protection: Providing security and protection for high-profile individuals, such as visiting dignitaries or celebrities.

• Search and Rescue: Engaging in search and rescue operations in high-risk environments, such as during natural disasters.
