The story of a group of cunning, down-on-their-luck former strippers who decide to swindle their Wall Street clients by running up their credit cards sounds too crazy to be true. But in fact, Hustlers is based on real events detailed in a 2015 New York Magazine article.

This over-the-top black crime comedy is, indeed, based on the true story of disgraced stockbroker Jordan Belfort. Not only does it have a record amount of swear words, but The Wolf of Wall Street also features a protagonist who speaks directly to the audience about the legality and morality of his own actions.

Based on true accounts from former Fox News employees, Bombshell dramatizes the story of how several women put their careers on the line in order to expose decades of sexual harassment by CEO Roger Ailes.

Sometimes it seems like Hollywood will never run out of stories from World War II to adapt for the big screen. The Imitation Game is another historical drama set in the second world war. It tells the true story of Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician tasked with decoding the machine the Nazis used to send coded messages.

During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, a brave hotel manager saved the lives of over a thousand refugees by allowing them to shelter in his hotel. The incredible true story was later turned into a historical drama featuring Don Cheadle and Joaquin Phoenix.

The Blind Side is the amazing story of how Michael Oher overcame poverty to end up playing in the NFL. This sports drama is based on yet another Michael Lewis book that details the very true story of Oher and his adoptive parents.

When an outsider falls in love with the heir to the House of Gucci, their romance becomes an epic battle for control over the iconic Italian fashion brand. Lady Gaga headlines House of Gucci, the film that tells the hard-to-believe true story of Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci.

There have been countless great movies that have been based on true events, whether they be disaster films, war movies, or biopics. What is your favorite movie based on a true story? What is it about this film that speaks to you?

For many, movies based on real events provide a unique sense of immersion and authenticity that cannot be replicated by purely fictional stories. These films often draw on real-life drama, heartbreak, and triumph, and provide a powerful reminder of the human experiences that shape our world.

Sully is my favorite movie based on a true story. The film portrays the miraculous landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River and the subsequent investigation into the actions of pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger. I was impressed by the suspenseful and emotional portrayal of the events, as well as the performances of Tom Hanks as Sully and Aaron Eckhart as his co-pilot. The film also raises important questions about the role of human judgement versus computer simulations in aviation safety. Overall, it's a powerful and inspiring story of human courage and expertise.

The channel was dedicated to true-to-life drama films, mostly made for TV. It showed films from a range of cinematic genres including romance, crime, drama and docusoaps, mostly based on real-life events.

Methods:  Several Internet movie databases and a database of phrases appearing in movies and TV programs were searched, supplemented with a Medline-search. No language restrictions were applied.

Unfortunately, misfortune is no stranger to history, and movies about real-life tragedies are actually pretty popular in the drama genre. Because there have been countless devastating events throughout the years, it is only natural that the film industry brings those poignant moments to light while simultaneously paying homage to those involved. Whether it be a tragic true tale of hope, courage, and bravery like 2017's Stronger or a cinematic depiction of a hero soldier in a warzone in 2016's six-time Academy Award-nominated Hacksaw Ridge, heartbreaking true-story movies can range in a wide variety.

From survival stories and epic war dramas to natural disasters and terrorist attacks, movies have, for decades now, held the power to bring audiences to nothing more than a sobbing mess with gut-wrenching portrayals of heroism to disastrous occurrences. These are some of the most impactful and poignant movies based on real-life disasters.

When it comes to great natural disaster movies based on true stories, 2015s Everest is a good pick. As the title suggests, the film is based on the 1996 Mount Everest disaster and focuses on the journey of hope, faith, courage, and bravery between two expedition groups as they attempt to descend from the summit during treacherous weather conditions, having made it to the top of the tallest mountain in the world.

Starring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russel as Mike Williams and Jimmy "Mr. Jimmy" Harrell, there aren't many movies like DeepwaterHorizon; the nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat film was nominated for two Oscars. Deepwater Horizon is filled with tense scenes and life-threatening experiences, culminating in a heartbreaking scene with the survivors reuniting with their families and a shaken Mike having a panic attack while being comforted by his wife and daughter. Before the credits roll, footage of the rig and pictures of the eleven people who died play out on screen.

United 93, which is among the most popular terrorism movies based on a true story, is a docudrama written and directed by Paul Greengrass that tells the harrowing story of the only hijacked plane that didn't reach its intended target during the 9/11 attacks. While Flights 11, 77, and 175 devastatingly hit their targets, Flight 93 didn't. Instead, it crashed into a Pennsylvania field due to the bravery of the flight crew and passengers on board.

Those who enjoy movies like Patriots Day should check out 2017's Stronger. It follows the events surrounding the Boston Marathon bombings that happened on April 15th, 2013. However, unlike Patriots Day, which follows the investigative side of things, Stronger is a biographical drama that highlights the impact it had on one man who was hailed a hero after identifying one of the bombers involved.

The film pursues the story of Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana (played by Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo) as they embark on saving the lives of their family and over a thousand other Hutu and Tutsi refugees during the Rwandan civil war. Hotel Rwanda is full of chilling and tear-jerking scenes. It's among the best sad movies based on true stories, with the real-life conflict that inspired the heartbreaking but high-rated film remaining as one of the most difficult to fathom for many.

From the mind of the iconic Clint Eastwood, this intriguing 2006 adventure drama introduces audiences to the true story of the Battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II. It is, of course, told from the point of view of the Japanese who fought in the war.

The war film which doesn't actually focus on the fighting stars Liam Nesson as Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist responsible for saving the lives of over a thousand Jewish people from the Holocaust. The Nazi's genocide of the Jewish people resulted in the deaths of an estimated six million Jews, and Schindler saved approximately 1200, who became known as the Schindlerjuden (Schindler Jews). An epilogue for the film shows the surviving Schindlerjuden and the actors visiting Schindler's grave. Schindler's List is widely regarded as one of the best movies of all time, so it only makes sense that it is essential in the genre.

But sometimes there's nothing better than a movie based on a true story, and we honestly don't blame Hollywood for turning to the world's population for their real tales of determination, survival, romance, crime and much more. Knowing that some of our favourite movies are centred on the lives of real people leaves us with an array of emotions at the end of a film. Sometimes that is one of inspiration, sometimes of pure disgust. Other times it's simply a heartwarming story that mirrors small elements from our lives, making our time on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn an insight into our self-discovery.

There was also the Julia Roberts starring film Erin Brockovich that inspired us to do good and have the best interest of everyone around us in the face of large corporations. It was also interesting to follow the journey of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, starring Margot Robbie, as well as the lives of the real-life teen burglars who robbed A-listers in the movie The Bling Ring. Health battles are also central to films such as The Big Sick and Brain on Fire. These movies definitely make us cling to our nearest and dearest... ff782bc1db
