It’s hard to believe, but Valentine’s Day is just a month away. For some, that has many implications for their relationship (or lack thereof), and people begin planning extravagant dates for their partners. Or, on the other hand, they start to look for a potential partner to spend the day with so that they don’t feel alone.
I don’t really buy into the whole holiday surrounding “love”, quite honestly. I see it as a consumerism ploy for companies to make more money in a particularly dry month devoid of other holidays or business opportunities. But hey, more power to those who do like celebrating their love and relationship on a random day.
I get it though. It’s easy to get swept up in the lovey-dovey aspect of the holiday (and month in general, as you’ll see lots of pink and red throughout February). But I really do try to advise people to ease up on their spending on Valentine’s Day, as that money could be used towards actually useful things for your relationship, like other experiences during other times in the year. Or like things around the house that you could use, such as cookware. In fact, cooking a romantic dinner with some new cookware is far more fun and strengthening for a relationship instead of going out to a restaurant and dropping $100 on a subpar meal at a place where there are dozens of other couples doing the exact same thing as you.
Candy boxes and plush toys are the main sellers around this holiday, and I can’t honestly wrap my mind around why people would actively still spend money on a teddy bear for a 25 year old or candy boxes for another adult who has lost their sweet tooth. That stuff just baffles me.
I do have reason to be stoked for February 14th this year, however. And that’s the release of a new album of one of my favorite artists. Luckily, my partner is just as keen on this artist as I am, so we’ll both be celebrating with a home-cooked dinner in our apartment while blaring the new album. What better way to bond with someone you love than over a meal prepared together and an artist you love releasing new music? To me, that’s the epitome of love and fortifying a relationship.
I guess everyone chooses to look at holidays and the likes differently, though. So I can’t fault the majority who enjoy Valentine’s Day and what it stands for.
