The Truckee Hotshots are a Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crew, based out of Truckee, CA. The crew was part of the Maximum Efficiency Level (MEL) build up that started in 2001 as a national effort to increase the amount of Hotshot Crews. Truckee earned Type 1 status in 2009, and has maintained that status ever since. We are stewards of land and hold a high standard in regard to our quality of work. We pride ourselves on work ethic, fitness, and leadership. We are always trying to improve upon those traits and we are looking for hard working candidates that are highly motivated to jump on the train.
Our days are usually spent constructing fireline, burning, or performing suppression tasks. Our tactics are dictated by conditions of the fire and suppression needs. The crew will work long hours on these tasks daily until objectives our met. We pride ourselves on strong work ethic and providing production with quality product. Each member of the crew has the responsibility to work hard and push themselves.
Our crew expects a high level of physical performance from each crew member. Crew members are expected to train in the winter months and show up ready for criticals and the fire season. It is crucial for new crew members to understand the program and put in the work to succeed. Our PT’s involve hiking with weight, running, and various full body workouts. Our PT program is designed to push every crewmembers limits and to practice pushing past them, something we do on the fire line constantly. Hikes, runs, and workouts are timed and critiqued. Every hike is a time to prove yourself, and every run is a race. “Take it if you want it.” Our crew hike “Acid Flat” must be completed, with fire gear, in under 40 minutes. If selected, crew overhead will help candidates prepare for the season with a winter training plan.
This job is mentally and physically demanding, you do not want to come in unprepared. If you are unprepared, you will have a very challenging time. An active outdoor lifestyle will not suffice for the demands of our fitness program. If your fitness is lacking you will have a hard time learning and retaining the teaching of being a Hotshot.
The Truckee Hotshots are proud to be housed at The Hobart Work Center, which is located 5 miles north of Truckee, CA, on the east side of the Tahoe National Forest. This work center has a long history of housing wildland fire suppression crews starting in the 1930's.
In 1985, the Truckee Project crews was created and stationed at Hobart. This was the beginning of our crew, growing into the Truckee Hand Crew in 1987. In 2001, when funding was approved for the Maximum Efficiency Level (MEL) crews, the Truckee District was designated as one of the locations to establish a crew to work towards obtaining Type 1 status.
In 2009, with Bobby Hubby leading the crew they passed the certification process and became the Truckee Hotshots, a Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crew. In 2018, after 17 years of service on the crew, Bobby retired. Scott Burghardt, long time hotshot, detailed the superintendent position in the summer of 2018, and he accepted the position permanently the following year. Scott, along with Foreman Kevin Mecham and Foreman Derek Kramer, decided to usher in the next era with a logo change. Based on an original photo, circa late 1800’s, the new logo commemorates the historic Hobart Southern #8 Train, which operated out of the town of Hobart Mills, hauling lumber from the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Co. Mill to the Central Pacific Rail Station in Truckee. During Scott’s tenure, the crew faced the challenges of the new fire environment, which brought fires over a million acres in size. In the years following, the crew revived the history of the lumber industry that once thrived on those same grounds, beginning to mill their own lumber and rebuild their own station. In the spring of 2023, Scott retired, and Brian Pimentel took over as crew superintendent. Today, the crew continues to mill their own lumber and embraces the homestead lifestyle at Hobart.
