We examine thin liquid or solid films on rigid substrates, focusing on the consequences of the rigid base, particularly entropic repulsion for random surfaces, the impact of thermal fluctuations in micro-fluids, and the suitability of the subgraph assumption for crystalline films. The project's main goals are to construct the continuous 2D Gaussian free field under the hard wall repulsion condition, characterize the SPDE dynamics of the micro-fluid, and understand limitations of the subgraph assumption, starting with a model for epitaxial crystal growth.
