Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts, now open to all) is led by the scouts, ages 11-18, with supervision and guidance from adults. The scouts work together for fun and skill development, building their abilities in the outdoors, STEM, arts, and other areas through the structure provided by merit badges, rank advancement, and a variety of youth leadership roles.
Since 1948, Troop 97 has been a particularly active troop, with weekly Tuesday meetings, monthly outings, and an annual week together at summer camp. Weekly meetings, planned by the scouts, include games; classes taught by the scouts and by guests; and teamwork toward rank and merit badge requirements. Our meetings are held at Beth El Congregation, a Conservative synagogue, and our sponsoring organization is Har Sinai – Oheb Shalom Congregation, a Reform synagogue. Our troop has a long history of religious diversity, with scouts from all faiths, including from across the Jewish denominations. The troop as a whole is not strictly kosher or sabbath-observant, but we are experienced in accommodating varying levels of observance (Jewish and non-Jewish).
Come join us for a weekly meeting or a trip to meet us and learn more!
For security purposes and to make sure you can find us, please let us know beforehand that you'll be coming by writing to our Scoutmaster. If you are 18 or younger, please include a second adult (e.g., your parent/guardian) on this email.
While Scouts BSA now allows all to participate in the program, this is accomplished through having "boys" troops and "girls" troops. These can be "linked" - e.g., a Boys Troop 97 and a Girls Troop 97 - with collaborative events but separate scout leadership positions and adult volunteer positions. Each troop must have five scouts, and we are currently looking to revive the Girls Troop 97. We encourage anyone who is interested in joining, regardless of gender, to contact us.
