DID YOU KNOW that dog and cat shelter adoption rates are decreasing? In 2017-2018, 44% of dogs were adopted from shelters, while the rest were purchased elsewhere. But in 2019-2020, this figure dropped to 39%. Cat adoption rates are also decreasing, from 47% to 43% in the same study. About 920,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in shelters in 2020.
Girl Scout Troop 3759 wants to help these animals get adopted, and prevent their surrender.
Why should I adopt? You can save a life!
Worried about behavior? About 75% of dogs are surrendered due to human circumstances, and no fault of their own.
Want a purebred? One fourth of dogs in shelters are purebred.
Want a puppy/kitten? 42% of dog adoptions are puppies, and 50% of cat adoptions are kittens.
Want an easier dog? Most adult dogs in shelters are already house trained and know basic commands.
Puppies are a lot of work! It takes a lot of time and energy to raise a puppy. Older dogs take a little less work than puppies, and many already know basic commands.
