SAGE GRANADA PARK UMC
Inviting Boys 6th through 10th Grade
Welcome to Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church Troop 286
A Word from the Scoutmaster
Lord Baden Powell, the founder of scouting, had this to say: “In Scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed.” That is the focus of our Troop: Encouragement, self-reliance, and learning through EXPERIENCE. Our Troop helps our boys learn life-long skills through fun activities and outings, leading others, and experiencing the many lessons that occur along the way! They are often humorous and the stuff of memories and stories that they gladly carry with them forever! We as adult leaders and parents strive to guide, support, and cheer on their efforts and keep them safe. It's like learning how to walk. Scouts have all the self-motivation to do so, and often want to start running on day one. They will stumble, get up, and go at it again. We just provide encouragement, provide a hand when they want it, cover any sharp corners, and enjoy the process!
Boy Scouts are all about the outdoor experience. Our teachers are the woods, the stars and the sky, and the natural world. Adventure calls and we always look forward to introducing first-timers to camping, hiking, and outdoor trips!
OUR MISSION, or why we exist, is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law consistent with the United Methodist Church's mission on youth development as set forth in the UMC Book of Discipline, §256.4.
OUR VALUES, or what we believe in, as both scouts and parents, are captured in the beliefs and values of the Scout Oath, Law, and Outdoor Code:
SCOUT OATH
"On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."
SCOUT LAW
"A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent."
OUTDOOR CODE
"As an American, I will do my best to: be clean in my outdoor manners, be careful with fire, be considerate in the outdoors, and be conservation minded."
OUR VISON is a program where everyone has FUN, learns new skills, builds lasting relationships and memories, and never feels left out!
