Scoutbook FAQ

What is Scoutbook?

Scoutbook is a web application designed for mobile devices. Scoutbook delivers a suite of easy-to-use Web-based tools that are helpful to Scouts, parents and unit leaders. It enables units to better communicate, update records, track advancement and manage activities. It is designed to simplify the way our members can track their advancement throughout Scouting - providing access to what’s happening across our organization and giving us the ability to track your Scouts’ progress in real time.

Who can register as a Scoutbook user?

Scoutbook is designed specifically for registered unit leaders, registered Scouts, and parents or guardians of registered Scouts.

How do I subscribe?

An invitation is sent from the troop to register. If you would like an inviation re-sent, please let one of the commitee members know and they will be able to re-send the invitation.

Is training available?

Yes. Training resources are available once you are logged in at Scoutbook.com, and additional training is in development.

Who can see my information?

Scoutbook is a secure platform that provides a safe way for parents, Scouts, and leaders to record, track, and manage their Scouting experience. Personally identifiable information will be kept secure. Unit leaders can see Scout advancement information as well as training data on other unit volunteers.

Where do I go for answers to technical questions related to Scoutbook?

More information is available on the Scoutbook.com forums or by asking the troop committee.

How is Troop 22 using Scoutbook?

Currently Troop 22 is using Scoutbook to better manage advancement and Merit Badge information. It is our goal that Scouts and Parents/Guardians work with our youth and adult leaders in using this tool much as you do your Boy Scout Handbook and Blue Cards. You can check off rank requirements as they are completed, which can help you keep track of what remains to be done to complete the next rank. A Scout Leader must still approve each requirement, and all these steps are color coded, plus a percentage of progress towards the next rank is displayed, to make it easy to see how your Scout is doing. Merit Badges are also recorded, and their requirements may be checked off (and approved by the appropriate leader) to keep up-to-date on their progress too.

It's my first time on Scoutbook. What should I do?

Use the information you received in the invitation sent via email from Troop 22. Once you have logged in please 1) Verify your profile information -- email address, street address, etc.. Adding a profile picture is optional, but it will help us 'put a face with the name' which can be quite helpful. 2) Verify your Scout(s) profile information, and email address if you want them to receive Troop email messages. 3) Review your son(s) Advancement, Camping, Service, Hiking, Rewards and Training records. Enter any missing information and TELL US if you notice any missing or incorrect information in any areas.

Here is a video introduction to Scoutbook that you may find helpful in learning to navigate the system.

What do I do next?

Keep your personal profile up-to-date (e.g. email address, which is where you will receive most troop communication)

Keep your Scout(s) profile(s) up-to-date. It’s important that each Scout’s full name and date of birth matches those in the national BSA system (as submitted on the membership application) so that advancement is properly tracked.

Decide whether your Scout(s) should have his own login to Scoutbook. We recommend this, since it allows the Scout to enter his own advancement progress and connect with merit badge counselors, his patrol leader, etc. In order for a Scout to login to Scoutbook, the parent must supply the Scout’s email address (the Troop will not automatically do this). The parent will be automatically copied on any Scoutbook messages that the Scout receives.

Enter and monitor advancement progress. You or your Scout can mark off requirements as ‘completed’. While each requirement must be approved by a Scout Leader before advancement is awarded, Scoutbook can help you keep track of what remains to be done to complete various ranks and merit badges. Requirements you’ve marked as completed have a green checkmark. Requirements that have been approved by a leader have a blue checkmark. After the rank/merit badge has been awarded requirements will be marked with gold checkmarks.

Can I add an extra email address to Scoutbook?

Yes. Parents are able to add additional connections for their scout(s): for example, another parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparents who are interested in the scout's progress. To do this, log into Scoutbook and choose the Scout from the 'My Family' part of the dashboard. From the Scout's home menu, choose 'Connections', and then click 'Add' and follow the prompts.

I have more questions.

Please feel free to email or talk with our Advancement coordinator or other Adult Leader. If they do not have the answer, they will help you find it.
