Did you know that a Boy Scout Troop met at The United Methodist Church ten years before Troop 65 began? On April 10, 1924, more than seventy years ago, Troop 3 was chartered and Scoutmaster Stanley Backner and 29 scouts began meetings and activities.
The first scouts in Troop 3 were Ken Bowen, Curtis Draper, Tom Edgar, Earl Holl, Cliff Radgeth, Lorrie Shreeves, Paul Sloan, Albert Stephenson, and a 13-year old Tenderfoot Scout named Charles Evans. The Assistant Scoutmasters were Mr. Ramsden and Mr. Malberg.
Just like the scouts of today, Troop 3's scouts wanted to perform a "good deed" for the citizens of Haddonfield. The Troop's first project was to distribute fly swatters to everyone in town.
Possibly because of the Great Depression and its demands on everyone, Troop 3's original charter was allowed to run out in 1932. Two years later, however, the church's Men's Bible Class President, Frank Baxter, saw the need for a troop again and Troop 65 was founded on February 25, 1934.
