Troop 647 does at least one major activity each month. Some of the activites that we do include:
Camping
Troop 647 goes on many campouts throughout the year. Past camping trips include camping on the beach at Assateague Island and exploring Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. Scouts get to set up their tents, cook their own food, and hang out with their fellow scouts.
Orienteering
Troop 647 goes orienteering every year. Scouts use a compass and a map to find their way around the wilderness. Scouts individually compete against other scouts by scoring points by locating landmarks on a map. The troop also competes against other troops by locating markers in the forest.
Hiking
Troop 647 goes on a many hiking trips. One popular hike is Old Rag in Shenandoah National Park. Scouts get to hike through the wilderness, while socializing with their fellow scouts and being able to see some incredible views.
White Water Rafting
Troop 647 has gone whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. Scouts need to work together to maneuver the raft around the rapids while getting to enjoy a thrilling experience.
Scouting for Food
Each year scouts go door to door collecting food for people who need it. All troops in the National Capital Area participate in scouting for food and all together the troops collect over 100,000 pounds of food each year.
Rock Climbing
Troop 647 goes on an overnight lock-in at Sport Rock where scouts can learn about how to rock climb and how to do it safely. Scouts are also able to earn the scouting merit badge which helps them get closer to becoming an Eagle Scout.
Goshen Summer Camp
Each summer, scouts go to the Goshen summer camp for a week where they get to participate in scout activities, earn merit badges which help them get closer to becoming an Eagle Scout, and meet new scouts from other troops. Scouts get to cook their own meals from the food that the camps provide.
