"Empowering boys to be leaders is the core of Scouting. Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and their troop. The boys themselves develop a troop program, then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve the goals. One of our most important challenges is to train boy leaders to run the troop by providing direction, coaching and support. The boys will make mistakes now and then and will rely upon the adult leaders to guide them. But only through real hands-on experience as leaders can boys learn to lead." - William Baden Powell
TROOP ORGANIZATION
PATROLS: Troops are made up of patrols. Each scout belongs to a patrol of 5-10 youth. We typically have 2-3 patrols. Every 6 months each patrol elects a new Patrol Leader from the group.
TROOP YOUTH LEADERS: The Troop is led by the Senior Patrol Leader and the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, scouts elected by the troop. The SPL and ASPL oversee weekly meetings, provide leadership at campouts, and interact with adult leaders.
TROOP ADULT LEADERS: Troops have BSA trained adult volunteer leaders. In addition to our Scoutmaster, we have several Assistant Scoutmasters. The Scoutmaster guides and mentors the youth leaders.
TROOP COMMITTEE: The Troop is supported by a Troop Committee of parent volunteers. The Troop Committee meets monthly and handles the administrative work. The Troop Committee is made up of trained adults/parents: Committee Chairperson, Treasurer, Charter Organization Representative, the Scoutmaster, and other Committee trained adults.
SCOUT ADVANCEMENT
Scouting provides a series of obstacles and steps in overcoming them through the advancement method. The Scout plans his advancement and progresses at his own pace. The Scout is rewarded for each achievement, which helps them gain self-confidence. The steps in the advancement system help a Scout grow in self-reliance and in the ability to help others.
BY THE BOOK
Troop 483 takes pride in not taking short cuts when it comes to Scout advancement. Scouts in Troop 483 know that if they are to achieve the rank of Eagle, they will do so "by the book". Adult leaders in Troop 483 guide and mentor Scouts to have high integrity in their pursuit of the rank of Eagle.
CAMPING
MONTHLY CAMPOUTS: We do a campout monthly, even in the winter! Most locations are within a 2 hour drive. Camping every month is not required. Campouts typically have a theme or activity such as cycling, canoeing, skiing, hiking, spelunking, etc. At the campouts the boys cook their own food. We do not allow “open and heat” meal options. Our youth select a balanced menu, shop according to the recipe and number of people, and they work together to cook the meals and clean up afterwards. This is where the experienced older Scout can really show off his cooking skills. Learning to cook is a requirement in scouts.
HIGH ADVENTURE CAMPING: High adventure camping is a more rugged camping experience and most require the Scout to be at least 14. Activities may include backpacking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking, orienteering, or scuba diving. Last summer our Troop took a crew to Philmont (New Mexico), this summer a crew is going to Northern Tier Boundary Waters, and next year we are planning a trip to Rocky Mountain High Adventure.
SUMMER CAMP: Every summer our troop goes to H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation for 10-day summer camp. Ask any of our Scouts what their favorite thing about Scouts is… “Bartle summer camp!”
YOUTH SAFETY: Boy Scouts of America has one of the, if not the most comprehensive youth protection programs. Being a smaller troop we have eyes on everyone and we enforce all youth protection requirements. If we don’t have enough adults available for any given activity to meet these standards, we do not move forward with meetings or campouts.
No scouting or cub scout experience needed.
Boys 11 to 17 can join any time prior to age 18.
