Our Favorite Outings
We try to go on an outing every month, and there are a few that we really love and try to do almost every year. Here are a few of those:
When snow is just starting to thaw at the base of Hoodoo in March or April, that is when we know it is time for snow camping. On this outing, we pack our gear and head up to Ray Benson Sno-Park and go behind the motorcycle range, to a very hidden, beautiful camping spot. As soon as we can, we start working on the shelters we are going to sleep in. Most people find a hill to dig out a snow cave to sleep in. Some people even work together to make a two-person snow cave! These snow caves keep us protected from the cold nights in the mountains. Once we finish building, we usually play games like capture the flag until dinner, where we go to the shelter to cook and play games before bed.
In the recent past, Troop 1 has gone on two different 50 miler trips. The first one was in June of 2022, where the scouts went over to the coast to embark on a 50 mile backpacking trip all the way back to Corvallis. This was a very hard trip, especially for those who had not done much backpacking up to this point, so the scouts that went on this trip decided to go on an easier 50 miler next time instead. So, in August of 2023, we planned for a 6 day, 5 night backpacking/canoeing trip where we paddled down the Willamette River in canoes and kayaks and set up camp and broke it down every day. We stored the equipment on the canoes, and brought it down the river with us.
During the rainy months when it is too cold to go camping, Troop 1 loves going on urban outings such as going to a Trail Blazers game, along with other activities in the Portland Area. In the past we have done things in Portland like going on the 4T trail and visiting Powell's before the game. One time, Damian Lillard dropped 50 points!
During the snowy season, we like to go to Hoodoo to complete the snow sports merit badge, or just to have fun and ski/snowboard around.
Nice, basic camping! No scout troop is complete without it. We go to a variety of locations every year. Some places where we have gone are Thompson lake, Camp Cone, Silver Falls, the Bowman property and Cottage Grove Lake. These are all amazing spots, and we always try to expand on where we go!
