Social media has influenced almost every teenager. In a report by Common Sense Media, the 1,500 young adults they surveyed said social media is important for them to get support from others and to express themselves creatively.

However, these two very factors grant the users access to content that may be detrimental to them. An example of online content that encourages this effect is trolling which is defined as engaging in aggressive and provocative behavior toward other people for the purpose of having fun or harming others.
