Ingenious Labs has been working on a machine that can rewrite reality. You and your team were close to a breakthrough until the device went haywire, sending the laboratory into a pocket dimension full of copies of the testing chamber, floating like endless islands in the void. Traverse several islands, scavenging the parts required to repair the Reality Engine and reverse your mistake.
I set out to create a short first-person narrative in Unreal Engine 5 that centers the gameplay around mastery of mechanics.
Movement:
Jet Pack - When navigating between islands, the player will need to utilize two limited-use boost jumps for traversal.
Wall Run - The player can traverse areas with dangerous or absent ground by sprinting along horizontal surfaces.
Environment:
Gravity Distortion - The ground doesn't stay still for long. Climb objects in low-gravity to traverse the Void.
Evaporating Platforms - Some objects phase in and out of reality. Timing is key.
The player assumes the role of Dr. Reginald Shim, who faces the task of repairing the Reality Engine. In a low-gravity environment, they will hop across platforms and islands that contain the parts necessary to complete the repairs. By only defining a start and end point, the player has free range to navigate the Void in any order they choose.
Falling into the Void, however, can be troublesome. Checkpoints are only stored at physical "Regen-A-Pod" locations that the player will have to find during exploration. Failing to activate a checkpoint means a full reset of progress.
With short time constraints to make a working prototype, I opted for a simplistic art style, with objects formed using Unreal Engine 5's Geometry and Brush Editing tools.
