After that, search for the city and download the content (when internet connection is available). A word of warning: file sizes can be rather large if the city has a large number of listings, so you will probably have to be connected via WiFi.

TripAdvisor announced the launch of a new offline feature for its mobile application which allows travelers to download reviews, photos and city maps before departing, and then access this information on the road when no data connection is available.

 An upgrade on value

To access the new offline feature, TripAdvisor app users may search for a city within the app when a data connection is available and tap a button to download city content.

Once downloaded, the app will automatically transition between the offline mode featuring 10 reviews per point of interest when no data connection is available, and the full live version of the app when it is cellular or WiFi-connected.

Users may add and remove city maps as needed based on where they are visiting. Users may also download the latest version of the city map to sync the content with the reviews and opinions available on TripAdvisor's constantly refreshed live site.

Similar to other online travel agencies, Travelocity was early to the game in mobile and ecommerce. During the Mobile Shopping Fall Summit last October, a Travelocity executive said the company sees the opportunity to leverage mobile in new ways to elevate the total travel experience (see story).

Mobile-exclusive experiences come into play once a consumer has booked a travel experience. From there, consumers rely on their mobile devices to alter travel plans. To tap into that utility focus, Travelocity recently updated its mobile app for iOS 7, and added an AirDrop feature that lets consumers share itineraries and plans to friends and family, as post-purchase offerings are area of investment for the brand going forward.

Google Maps has a function that lets you download offline maps of cities. Known as Google Offline Maps, this function is available for the more popular or developed cities such as Singapore, Bali, Santorini and so on.

Google offline maps will only work for driving instructions. There will be NO walking/public transport instructions available. If you wanna walk, you can still refer to the map to help you navigate the way manually.

Getting Around

1. Italy Travel Guide by Triposo: One stop for your complete mobile guide to Italy! The free travel app provides offline maps and useful information on landmarks and restaurants in over 100 cities. We also recommend TripAdvisor City Guides and Ulmon Travel Guide and Offline Maps interactive apps for larger cities.

I found the app especially useful in a smaller city like Lyon where I really had no idea about what there was to see or do. The app took me to all the top sights and attractions with ease. I felt like a travel blogging cheat as this was such an easy way to discover the city!

I installed the city guide app onto my phone and downloaded the updates. Mind you, the updates are all the latest places, reviews, photos for a location and for Singapore, and it comes out to a hefty 27 mb for the application, and nearly 100 mb if you install all the updates! Plan ahead as I did to install and update the app at a fast and free wifi spot before you head out.

TripAdvisor City Guides was the first native mobile app that TripAdvisor ever offered. Travelers could download maps, reviews and photos and use the app offline when traveling abroad. We reached 1 million downloads in 3 months while maintaining user rating of 4.5+ on both iOS and Android App stores.

When we designed the download/offline capability of the City Guides app, we had a few possible approaches. One, we could make it explicit by offering travelers an on/off switch to decide if the app is pulling live data over the Internet or staying offline by using the local downloaded data. Two, we could do this automatically by detecting if the internet is available on the phone. Three, we could pull live data automatically only when users are on WiFi. Or four, we could even offer a data access slider that let users control the amount of live data that the app can use before switching to offline.

We got the idea when we were on our way to a meeting in San Francisco from our Palo Alto office. We found ourselves arriving early so we decided to get some coffee first. We used our City Guides prototype and kept our phone offline to see how well it worked. While it had no trouble finding us a great nearby coffee shop and showing it on the map, we did not know toward which direction to start walking. We were just coming up to the street from the underground BART station and were completely disoriented. That was when we said to ourselves, "Wouldn't it be nice if there could be an arrow showing us the direction to the coffee shop at all time?"

Leveraging the Tripadvisor US audience, the brand engaged travellers through paid media, influencer content, personalised direct emails and a takeover of Tripadvisor city pages covering top destinations. 2351a5e196
