Technique: Portrait Miniatures

This is an advanced hands-on technique class. The first miniaturists used watercolor to paint on stretched vellum, or on playing cards trimmed to the shape required. Italian and English miniaturist approached paint build up and shading from opposite stances. Both methodologies will be introduced. I will be providing base palates with pigment and some basic 0 brushes, but those of you who like your own special tools for tight, micro-painting, please do bring your own. In addition, a wallet size photo of a person you would like to paint in miniature may make your experience more enjoyable. You will leave the class with (hopefully, if time allows) 2 miniatures....one in Italian style and one in the English style.

Style: Italian Whitevine

The Italian Humanists developed a white vine stem border known as Bianchi Girari. This style, which was based on an earlier Italian form, originated in 15th century Florence and spread northward throughout Europe.

This hands-on drawing and painting class covering initials, borders, animalia, and other ornamentation. This is a fun how to draw and paint class!

Technique: The Art of Flourish, the Cadeau

Cadel or Cadeau, a form of embellished letters were first created by Jean Flamel, secretary to Duc de Berry at the turn of the 15thcentury. Cadeau were applied most often to writs, patents, and other documents of legal and lasting value. When ornamented with Cadeau, the document was then considered the original form. All copies would not have the celebrated ornamentation.

The three methods of Cadeau construction will be introduced with addition of ornamentation. Handouts will be provided with demonstration and hands-on practice. This is an-any level drawing class.
