California Community Colleges

There are 28 Community Colleges in the Bay Area providing on campus and online course options to meet the needs of students with jobs, families and other obligations. Each College provides supportive services on campus including, career counseling, mental health counseling, Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), and Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS).

California Community Colleges also provide free or low-cost Career Education classes (CE). CE courses are designed to assist adults in developing new skills or updating their current skills through work-based learning opportunities and academic coursework.

California Community College Costs

  • Cost: California residents pay $46 per unit for college credit courses. A California resident who enrolls in 12 units is considered a full-time student and would pay $46 x 12 units, or $552 per semester

  • Length of program: Varies

  • Other Costs: Books access fees

  • Prerequisites: HSD/GED

  • License or Certificate: AA/Certificates


The California College Promise Grant is available only for students at California Community Colleges. The California College Promise Grant waives the per-unit enrollment fee (currently $46). Once the application is complete, it should be mailed or hand delivered to your community college's financial aid office.

Your local workforce board has limited funds available for low-income individuals to get the training they need to earn an industry-recognized certificate. Meet with a career navigator from Ohlone College Career Ventures located at the Ohlone College Newark Center and see if you qualify. Qualified participants may receive financial assistance towards education/training, work-based learning, internships, and on-the-job training.
