How to convert gas price from thousand cubic meters to MWh or BTU?

In Russia, accounting is in $ per thousand cubic meters of gas ($/Tcm)

In Europe, accounting is in euros per megawatt hour (€/MWh)

In the US and Asia, prices are quoted in $ per million British thermal units ($/MMBtu)

European benchmark

The basic benchmark for gas prices in Europe are contracts for delivery at the TTF Holand hub. Futures are

traded on the ICE and CME exchanges and are quoted in euros per megawatt per hour. To convert this

value to $ per cubic meter, you need to multiply it by a ratio of 10.5 and multiply by the current EUR/USD rate.

For example, on September 29, 2021, the gas price at the Dutch TTF hub was 87.22 EUR/MWh. In dollars

per thousand cubic meters, it will be equal to: 87.22*10.5*1.16 = $1,062 per thousand cubic meters of

natural gas.

American benchmark

In the US, the basic benchmark for gas prices are contracts of delivery at the Henry Hub. Benchmark futures

with the ticker NG trade on the NYMEX and are quoted in millions of British thermal units (MMBtu).

To convert to $ per thousand cubic meters, you need to multiply the value in MMBtu

by a factor of 35.8. For example, as of September 29, 2021, November NGX1 futures closed

at 5.477 MMBtu. This quote is equivalent to 5.477 * 35.8 = $196 per thousand cubic meters.

The New York Mercantile Exchange NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange) is the leading American

futures commodity exchange. The NYMEX exchange trades the Henty Hub benchmark gas, which is

the basis for gas prices in the Western Hemisphere and has a significant impact on pricing around the world.

The NYMEX gas price unit is US dollar / MMBtu.

The TTF (Title Transfer Facility) gas hub is a virtual trading point for natural gas in the Netherlands.

It provides an opportunity for traders to conduct exchange transactions, and is one of the largest gas hubs in Europe.

Gas on the TTF is traded in Euros per MWh.

It is important to remember that US gas prices do not take into account the final cost to the consumer,

including transportation, liquefaction (regasification) costs, insurance, seller profitability. Therefore, the difference by

several times from European and Asian prices should not be misleading.

You can recalculate the volumes of gas given in energy units (or in units of the amount of heat)

into cubic meters that are more familiar to us. Below are the results of such calculations in various

currencies (US dollar, Euro), reduced to a volume of 1000 m³, as well as the conversion rules.

Asian benchmark

Gas prices in Asia are measured in the same units as in the US, i.e. $/MMBtu.

The benchmark is the Platts JKM indicator, which is calculated using spot prices.

On the CME exchange, you can find the corresponding futures with the ticker JKM.

Meters and Feet

Billions or millions of cubic meters are used when talking about production,

reserves or exports in Russia and Europe, while in the US and the UK they are recorded

in billions of cubic feet (Bcf). There are 0.0283 cubic meters in one cubic foot.

To convert Bcf to billion cubic meters, you need to multiply them by this value.

For example, US Company X mined 1,000 Bcf. This value will correspond to 1000 * 0.0283 = 28.3 billion cubic meters.

If the gas price is given in $ per Bcf, then it can be converted into $ per thousand cubic meters by multiplying by a factor of 1/0.0283 = 35.3.

Газовый хаб TTF (Title Transfer Facility) — виртуальная торговая точка для природного газа в

Нидерландах. Он предоставляет возможность торговцам проводить биржевые операции, и

является одним из крупнейших газовых хабов Европы. Газ на TTF торгуется в Евро за МВт·час.

Важно помнить, что цены на газ в США не учитывают конечную стоимость для потребителя, включающую транспортировку, затраты на сжижение (регазификацию), страхование, рентабельность продавца. Поэтому отличие в несколько раз от европейских и азиатских цен не должно вводить в заблуждение.

Азиатский бенчмарк

Цены на газ в Азии измеряются в тех же единицах, что и в США, то есть в $/MMBtu. Бенчмарком выступает индикатор Platts JKM, который рассчитывается по спотовым ценам. На бирже CME можно найти соответствующий фьючерс с тикером JKM.

Метры и Футы

Когда речь идет об объеме добычи, запасов или экспорта в России и Европе используются миллиарды или миллионы кубических метров, в то время как в США и Великобритании учет ведется в миллиардах кубических футов (Bcf). В одном кубическом футе 0,0283 кубических метра. Чтобы перевести Bcf в млрд кубических метров необходимо умножить их на эту величину.

Например, американская компания Х добыла 1000 Bcf. Эта величина будет соответствовать 1000 * 0,0283 = 28,3 млрд кубометров.

Если цена газа приведена в $ за Bcf, то перевести ее в $ за тысячу кубометров можно путем умножения на коэффициент 1/0,0283 = 35,3.
