Once standing in a harsh environment in the height of the mountains, this Bristlecone Pine grew extremely slowly, forming dense wood that resisted rot and weathering.
Sadly, the tree was cut down in 1964 by a member of the United States Forest Service for research purposes - at that time, they did not realise the age and importance of the tree.
Today, Prometheus is a key example of the importance of protecting ancient trees.
