Tree Carbon Meter is a field tool for measuring and recording carbon sequestration data of trees in the KAZA Transfrontier Conservation Area. This policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data.
1. Data We Collect
Tree Carbon Meter collects only the data you directly enter or that your device generates during field measurement:
Tree measurements — diameter at breast height (DBH), height, species, above-ground biomass, and CO₂ estimates you record.
GPS coordinates — the latitude and longitude of each tree you measure, captured from your device's location sensor at the moment of recording.
Photos — optional tree photos you attach to a measurement, stored locally on your device.
Device heading — compass bearing read from your device magnetometer, used only in real time to display the on-screen compass on the map view. It is never stored or transmitted.
App preferences — your chosen display mode (Ranger/Expert) and language preference, stored locally on your device.
2. Data We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect your name, email address, or any account information.
We do not collect advertising identifiers or analytics data.
We do not track your location in the background.
We do not collect data from children. The app is not directed at users under 13.
3. How Data Is Stored
All measurement data (trees, GPS coordinates, photos) is stored locally on your device only in an SQLite database. Data is never automatically uploaded to any server, cloud service, or third party.
If you use the Export feature, the app generates a CSV or PDF file on your device. You control where that file goes — sharing it via email, cloud storage, or messaging is your own action and is governed by the app you choose to share with.
4. Permissions Used
Location (ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION) — used to geotag the tree you are measuring at the moment you save the record. Location is accessed only while the app is open and in use; it is not accessed in the background.
Camera (CAMERA) — used to take an optional photo of a tree or to scan a QR tree tag. Camera access is only activated when you tap the camera or scanner button.
Storage (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES / READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) — used to attach a photo from your gallery to a tree record. Only accessed when you choose a photo from the gallery.
5. Third-Party Services
The map view displays tiles from OpenStreetMap (openstreetmap.org). When you open the map, your device requests map images from OpenStreetMap servers. OpenStreetMap may log the IP address of those requests per their own privacy policy.
No other third-party services, SDKs, or analytics frameworks are included in this app.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any third party. The only way measurement data leaves your device is when you explicitly choose to export and share it yourself.
7. Data Retention and Deletion
All data is stored on your device. You can delete individual tree records within the app, or delete all data by uninstalling the app. We have no copy of your data and cannot delete it on your behalf.
8. Security
Data is stored in a local SQLite database on your device, protected by your device's own security (screen lock, encryption). We do not transmit data over a network, so there is no network-based security risk from this app.
9. Changes to This Policy
If we materially change this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and post the revised policy at the same URL. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
