ABOUT

Treat Yourself! is a FREE digital download snack/street food gijinka zine. The aim of this zine is to feature all the delicious pastime meals from various cultures and to practice the application of creativity and expression of originality in visual design.

There are 195 countries in the world, each with its own story to tell, but with only so many having the chance to be heard. There need to be more introductions to other countries' lifestyle and traditions. But how?

Food is one simple way of demonstrating one's culture to another person. Currently, the media falls short in featuring diverse cuisine. Through sharing uncommon food in art, you are expanding the opportunity to experience a world of different flavors!

By joining this project, you also gain a little bit of experience in the zine world. It's a good opportunity to build your illustration portfolio plus you can use your submission as an example for applications to other zines.

This issue's theme is Southeast Asia.

Countries featured are Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

What counts as a Snack?

A snack is a light meal normally eaten after lunch or after supper. It consists of only a few ingredients and is simple to prepare. It can be shared or portioned and/or is easy to hold by the hand. Street foods are ready-to-eat snacks sold by vendors in public spaces such as alleys and markets.

Some beverages can be considered a snack. What's most important is that the drink must have more than one ingredient (not including water). For example, drinks including tapioca pearls, ice cream, or chopped fruit may be considered a snack but fruit juices and smoothies are not.

There are also some cakes and pies that are more dessert than snacks. A dessert is typically sweet and eaten directly after a heavy meal.

Some noodle dishes are eaten as snacks.

If the dish is too heavy then it will be excluded from the options. That said, every suggested snack will be reviewed before being approved. Please refer to the rules page for further information on what is accepted as a snack.
