Candieas's research on institutional quality evaluates the organizational structures and capabilities that affect human development outcomes. This line of research focuses the social psychology of the organizational environment. Candieas uses measures of social capital, trust, and motivation to evaluate overall institutional quality, structure, and capability.

Candieas's research on applied research methodology focuses on improving methods to increase policy and program evaluation validity and utilization. His work focuses on incorporating machine learning and qualitative data analysis for social science research and evaluation. His methodological work has been presented at the American Evaluation Association annual conference.
