Championing a

Transfer Receptive Culture

The UC Santa Cruz Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Equity Talk will bring together faculty, administrators, staff and students from UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) and San Jose City College (SJCC) to explore how we can further activate the five elements of a Transfer Receptive Culture (TRC), which is defined as an institutional commitment to support transfer students of color. The workshop will present an equity analysis of transfer pathways at SJCC and UCSC, elevate student perspectives on transfer experiences, and serve as a catalyst for further dialogue and action planning. Cultivamos Excelencia, a Hispanic Serving Institutions collaborative between SJCC-UCSC, has engaged TRC for the past 5 years while implementing a set of interventions that address barriers to transfer access, retention, and graduation from UCSC.

STARS provides culturally responsive support to transfer, re-entry, veteran students, as well as students who do not have traditional family support due to experiences in the foster care system, with homelessness, abuse, parents who have been incarcerated, or other factors impacting their family life
