Background: The Paratransit Committee identified the potential for establishing a separate subcommittee focused on taxis at its meeting during the 2011 Annual TRB Meeting. The interest in taxis as an important component of paratransit has grown in recent years, with various research papers on taxis submitted and accepted by the Committee at Annual Meetings and the strong success of two Paratransit Committee workshops addressing taxis at the 2008 and 2010 Annual Meetings.
Committee members and Friends discussed options for formation of such a subcommittee, including joint sponsorship with two other TRB committee that also deal with taxis: the Airport Terminal and Ground Access Committee and the Accessible Transportation and Mobility Committee. A motion was made and approved unanimously by Paratransit Committee members to establish a Joint Subcommittee on Taxis under Paratransit, in coordination with the two other TRB committees.
Subsequently, the Accessible Transportation and Mobility Committee voted to be a co-sponsor of the subcommittee, and the Airport Terminal and Ground Transportation Committee agreed to support the joint subcommittee, with the Paratransit Committee as the primary parent committee.
