Dr. Habib welcomed everyone and thanked them for joining the committee meeting. There was in-person and virtual attendance. Dr. Habib thanked everyone for joining the meeting.
Dr. Habib provided instructions about wearing masks, emergency evacuation procedures, and TRB’s discrimination, harassment and bullying policies.
4. Committee Program
Report from the Section (Anusha Jayasinghe, Chandra Bhat, Robert Hazlet)
MS. ANUSHA JAYASINGHE
Anusha thanked the committee chair and volunteers.
Since 2018 the impact factor of TRR has been increasing steadily.
In 2018-2020 it was the number 1 transportation journal for policy sources.
TRB executive committee is currently working on different critical issues, such as how transportation serves the broader societal goals. They now focus on five major topics: safety, security, economic and societal vitality, climate change and sustainability, and public health and equity.
TRB is still trying to finale its strategic plan. TRB will update everyone once it is finalized.
TRB is also going to adopt a new strategic plan. Please login to MYTRB and update your demographic profile. TRB is trying to promote equity. We have less than 50% of members' demographic information and less than 20% of friends' demographic information.
TRB has a new deputy director who will be working on cross-cutting issues and technical content and a new director of operations who will work on administrative and support staff to increase efficiency.
The next TRB will be from 8-12 January 2023.
Dr. Chandra Bhat
Dr. Bhat thanked Ms. Jayasinghe for joining us as a TRB staff member.
Dr. Bhat thanked Ms. Libby Rushley, Mr. Robert Hazlet, Dr. Stacey Bricka, Dr. Khandker Nurul Habib for their various contributions.
Dr. Bhat thanked all members and volunteers for their help in reviewing papers.
Dr. Bhat asked to develop a task force to formalize the triennial strategic plan (TSP). TSP will be a short and forward-looking document. It would be great if we could complete it by January 2021 and approve it by the next TRB. The target date for submission is April 2023. We are currently working to develop a template.
Dr. Bhat asked to increase the visibility of the sub-committee.
ROBERT HAZLET
TSP will be a big focus for our committee in the coming year. A task force will be formed, and all the support will be provided. Mr. Hazlet thanked Dr. Bhat for all his contributions in the last eight years for outstanding work. The new section chair will be Mr. Martin Palmer, from the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Committee Report (Khandker Nurul Habib)
The committee was rotated last year before Dr. Habib took over. We have a total of 38 regular members and 3 emeritus members. 61% of members are from the USA, 39% of members are international.
We lost an emeritus member David Hartgen, and we recognize his tremendous contribution to this committee (who served the committee as chair and member).
Our gender data are not completed.
75% of our members are from academia, 10% from consultants, and 2.5% from federal organizations.
We have 867 active friends who are helpful during the paper review. 65% of them are from the USA, and 35% are from various international organizations.
Dr. Habib encouraged everyone to provide their demographic information in the MYTRB profile.
In terms of papers review, in 2022, there is an increase in the number of papers. We accepted 62% of the papers. Out of 137 papers, 58 are submitted for presentation and publication, and we recommended 12 papers for TRR (21%).
We tried to get at least two reviews from members and the rest of them from friends. Unfortunately, we have only two reviews in 11% of the papers.
Dr. Habib encouraged members to accept the invitation and complete the review before the deadline. If you need help, feel free to reach out to Dr. Eluru and Dr. Habib.
Our section is sponsoring two workshops in TRB 2022. Workshop 1024
Doctoral Research in Transportation Policy, Planning, and Analysis
A total of 24 presentations were selected. Dr. Rolf Moeckel mentioned that we received 35 applications and accepted 24. Eventually, 15 speakers were present during their presentation.
Workshop 1433
Virtual Activities, Travel Behavior, and Demand Management in a Post-Pandemic Era Organizer:
Giovanni Circella, University of California, Davis Ipek Sener, Texas A&M Transportation Institute Md Sami Hasnine, Howard University
Khandker Nurul Habib, University of Toronto
The committee has only one lectern session this year. We have 5 papers selected for this presentation. We have one collaborative poster session today with AEP25 AED70.
Dr. Habib encouraged everyone to join the poster sessions.
5. Committee Business
(a) Subcommittee reports
Subcommittee Reports (Naveen Eluru, Charisma Choudhury, João de Abreu, Joe Chow)
AEP30(1) Time Use & Activity Patterns- the meeting was cancelled. Srinath will do a webinar later
AEP30(2) Route Choice & Spatio-Temporal Behavior- (Joseph Chow) hybrid- (Haggai Davis)
Dr. Chow updated about the subcommittee meeting. There were about 20 attendees. There were five people online and 15 people in person. Various interesting topics were covered.
COVID-19, multimodal travel behavior and data needs, freight route behavior, and passenger route choice behavior have been discussed. The curbside pick-up was also discussed. We also discussed how LIDAR data could be used.
We used various topics and discussed incorporating our subcommittees' contributions to the TSP. We also asked for feedback from the audience. We are trying to identify a stronger role of the subcommittee.
It is a joint subcommittee between travel behavior and network modeling. Therefore revisiting our goals and objective may help us make our focus stronger.
There is also a need to better understand the multimodal network, not just one type of road network-how people work on multimode and time-scale.
Equity was another important aspect. How passenger travel behavior is impacted by equity was discussed elaborately.
AEP30(3) International Travel Behavior (IATBR)- Abdul Pinjari (Geovanni Circella) AEP30(4)
IATBR did not organize any meetings in the TRB. However, Dr. Circella updated us on behalf of Dr. Pinjari.
The annual general meeting was held online in December 2021.
The new lifetime achievement award was given to Dr. Pat Mokhtarian from Georgia Tech.
Eric Pass Dissertation was given to Dr. Stephen Wong. An honorable mention was given to Dr. Ali Najmi.
The new chair of IATBR is Dr. Pinjari. The new vice-chair is Dr. Charisma Choudhury. Dr. Taha Rashidi will be running the social media and communications.
A series of webinars were organized by IATBR, which were very successful. All recordings are on the IATBR YouTube channel. Dr. Charisma Choudhury was thanked for her contribution.
This year, two new board members are joined: Dr. Kara Kockelman and Dr. Chiara Calastri. IATBR will be in Santiago, Chile, this year (16th IATBR conference 2024Dec 2022)
The following IATBR will be in Europe (17th IATBR conference 2024)
Behavioral Processes- Floridea Di Ciommo & Kate Deutsch hybrid-(Naveen Eluru)
Dr. Eluru updated us about the comment. Three main points were discussed.
How can we collect data on minority and how do we reach them? How do we connect qualitative and qualitative research?
How can we employ citizen science to collect data, especially while collecting data on the minority?
Dr. Ciommo mentioned that they would organize some webinars based on these findings.

Behavior Change / Behavior Science a task force:
A new task force under the Transportation Demand Management (AEP60) Committee Scope: Behavioral science is the study of how decision-making biases affect individual decisions, and how we can overcome and/or work with these biases to stimulate sustainable
choices or choices beneficial to individual health and happiness (e.g., decreasing driving alone). The subcommittee will look to blend traditional research areas with fields such as behavioral economics and psychology to improve the ability to predict, model, and influence travel behavior. The focus will be given to testing “nudge” type interventions (i.e., those that are not onerous) to encourage the use of sustainable modes and decrease VMT.
