Now, you are probably thinking all of this information is great and I see the importance but how do I get started and introduce these diverse books?
Step 1: We recommend starting this process by first and foremost reading the book first. By taking the time to read the book first before sharing it with children you are better able to ensure it's diversity, make sure it is accurate (you can check the date of publication to help you with this), and to get more comfortable with it. This will also allow time to perhaps look up the pronunciation of words or a name if needed and become more familiar/do some initial research if it is a topic or culture you are unfamiliar with.
Step 2: Sit down and read it with the children, you can point out the illustrations to them. Be open to questions and conversations. Do the children notice any commonalities? Differences? We will explore how to navigate these conversations with young children on the next page.
Step 3: Keep the conversation going, keep including books of diverse nature. This will ensure they see a broader representation of that culture or diverse topic and not just a single view point from one book. Keep diverse books and resources as a regular part of your program, make it exciting - don't keep them hidden away in the cupboard.
