TRAVEL TIPS
1. Respect Local Customs & Culture
Sri Lanka is a deeply spiritual country with a strong Buddhist heritage. When visiting temples:
Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered).
Remove shoes and hats before entering.
Never touch or take selfies with Buddha statues.
2. Weather & Best Time to Visit
South & West Coast: Best from December to April.
East Coast: Best from May to September.
Central Highlands (Ella, Nuwara Eliya): Pleasant year-round but bring a light jacket – it can get chilly!
3. Local Transport Insights
Tuk-tuks are great for short distances—always agree on the fare or use a meter.
Trains offer scenic rides (especially the Kandy to Ella route).

4. Pack Smart
Bring lightweight cotton clothes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a rain jacket.
Hiking or walking shoes are essential if you're planning to explore tea trails or wildlife parks.
5. Wildlife Etiquette
Sri Lanka is home to elephants, leopards, and exotic birds.
Always keep a respectful distance.
Avoid feeding animals and littering in national parks.
6. Stay Connected
Buy a local SIM card (Dialog or Mobitel) at the airport for affordable data and calls.
Many areas, even remote ones like Ella and Yala, have good 4G coverage.
7. Currency & Payments
Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR)
Keep small denominations for tuk-tuks, shops, and tips.
Most cities have ATMs, but rural areas may not.
8. Food & Water
Try local dishes like rice and curry, kottu roti, hoppers, and fresh seafood!
Drink only bottled or filtered water. Avoid tap water and ice in remote areas.
9. Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Typical tips:
Guide: LKR 500–1000/day
Driver: LKR 500–1000/day
Restaurants: 5–10% if service charge isn’t included
10. Travel Insurance
Always travel with a valid travel insurance policy that covers medical emergencies, adventure activities, and trip cancellations.
