Transport in Narrow Channels III

Scope of the workshop

Physicists, chemists, biologists and material scientists often deal with systems whose dynamics is controlled by transport across narrow channels. For example, in biology neuronal signaling is controlled by the sodium potassium ionic pumps, mRNA is transported across the nuclear membrane by specific pores, plant transpiration occurs via confined hydrogels. At larger length scales, red blood cells, among other structures, are transported in veins and arteries. On the synthetic side, the rapid development of micro- and nano-fluidic based technologies like nano-membranes for water filtration, transistors, nano- chemical reactors call for a better understanding of transport across narrow channels and pores. Interestingly, the community studying transport in narrow channels is scattered among different fields and, as a result, has not yet been recognized. A first attempt to draw attention to this emerging community is represented by a special issue of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, entitled "Transport in Narrow Channels" (co-edited by us). We believe that it would be timely to exploit the momentum generated by this special issue by organizing a workshop on the same topic that would bring together, for the first time, the emergent community. Indeed, assembling the prominent opinion makers in this field will set the basis for identifying common problems, sharing approaches, and setting out a road map to their solution, developing a common language along with a common properly tailored tool box capable to provide help in seeking their solutions. Clearly, in order to fulfill these tasks bringing together scientists with diverse backgrounds and different approaches that typically are scattered among diverse community is essential. We invited and welcome contributed speakers whose scientific interests include:

• • Ionic liquids in narrow pores 

  • Translocation of polymers in pores 

  • Active micro-rheology and active transport in narrow channels 

  • Transport across biological channels and pores 

  • Theory and simulation of transport in narrow  channels

The long-term goal of this workshop is to promote interdisciplinary research, in particular by joining the synthetic device-oriented community with the biophysics one. Indeed, we believe that the mixture of topics and approaches we propose will provide not only a fertile ground to clarify the open questions from different perspectives and provide the basis to set up common strategies aiming at their solutions but it could also lead to a vibrant scientific discussion that can open the way to novel interesting research topics.
