Section IV: " Yielding stance" type of postures
Explanation:
Use the yielding stance with various kinds of postures for which the yielding stance type is suitable. Base the decision to use this type of stance on the primary application that is desired, using the following pictures and descriptions as a guide.
[Note: "Smooth step back repulse monkey" is an example of a "yielding stance". The term is used when the same hand and foot are forward, as opposed to the opposite hand and foot forward which occurs during "twist step back, repulse monkey". You don't have to necessarily be movement backward, though. It seems the weight distribution is like a 3-7 stance (30% forward, 70% backward). In the next section, the center stance is also referred to as the 4-6 stance (40% forward, 60% backward). I thought about calling this section "back stance type of postures, but that would not necessarily use the same hand as foot forward, so I will stick with calling it yielding stance.]

(1) Yielding stance with single piercing fist
1. Action:
(a) Right yielding stance with left push aside and right piercing fist:
From the "attention posture" [with heels together], step the right foot forward using one large step with the toes pointing to the front, and [then step] the left foot behind [the right foot] with the toes turned outward approximately 30 degrees. Both the feet and groin [kua] are separated wide. Buckle the knees, and wrap the inner thighs. Bend the back leg more than the front leg is bent. Keep the center of gravity centered between the bottom of the two feet. At first, push the left fist aside in front of the chest toward the left, and then pluck [yank] backwards to withdraw it to the left waist. At the same time, turn the body's waist about 45 degrees to the left. Then when stepping the right foot forward, raise the right fist, passing it by the side of the right ear and then striking forward with a piercing fist in front of the forehead with the tiger's mouth facing downward. Allow the right shoulder to go forward, sinking the shoulder and dropping the elbow, with the arm finishing in a circular shape. The [right] fist is at head height and [centered] on a line beneath the nose. Look at the right fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (35).
(b) When doing left yielding stance with right push aside and left piercing fist, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I get out of the way with a step and use one fist to push aside the opponent's hand. At the same time, I step up with a piercing strike to the opponent's temple.
3. Essential points:
Crown of the head pushing upward, sink the shoulders and drop the elbows. Sink the waist jìng downward, and sink the Qi to the dan-tian. Buckle the knees, and wrap the inner thighs. Sending out the fist and stepping forward must happen as one movement.

(2) Yielding stance with chopping palm
1. Action:
(a) Right yielding stance with left push aside and right chopping palm:
Move into a yielding stance using the same method as in posture (1) . When doing the "dodge step" with left foot, push the left palm aside toward the left in front of the chest, and then pluck [yank] backwards to withdraw it to the left waist. At the same time, turn the body's waist about 45 degrees to the left. Then when stepping the right foot forward and turning the waist powerfully to the left, use the right palm as an Yang palm to chop forward with the four fingers pointing upward and in line with the nose. Allow the right shoulder to go forward, sinking the shoulder and dropping the elbow. Look at the right palm, finishing the posture as in Figure (36).
(b) When doing left yielding stance with right push aside and left chopping palm, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front or perhaps the side, I get out of the way [to create] an opening, using one palm to push aside the opponent's hand or chop the opponent's hand, and I use the other palm to chop the opponent's upper section.
3. Essential points:
Send out the palm powerfully using the waist, with the rest of the essential points the same as in the previous posture's item 3.
[Note: This is describing using the stepping of both feet to get out of the way of a strike (a dodging step 閃步), with one foot going forward and the other foot stepping behind the front foot. I am guessing that it is similar to a Xingyi step up, although the back foot could step back more if needed. The text just says that it ends behind the front foot. Click here is short demonstration of the "dodge step".]

Move the right fist outward in front of the chest, and then block and pound with the fist towards the lower left, with the forearm pounding parallel [to the ground]. Allow the right shoulder to go forward, sinking the shoulder and dropping the elbow. The Yang fist is facing upward, with the tip of the fist [centered] on a line beneath the nose. Twist the body's waist to the left and squat down, sitting solidly on the back leg. Look at the right fist, finishing the posture as in Figure (37).
(b) When doing left yielding stance with parry, block and pound with fist, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I get out of the way from in front of the opponent. After that, I step up or maybe step back, using one fist to parry and pluck [yank] the opponent's hand or pull the shoulder straight [back to the waist]. At the same time, I step up and use one fist to block and pound the opponent's arm.
3. Essential points:
You must pluck and pull the opponent's arm straight back, while at the same time using the whole body's weight to pound and strike. The rest of the essential points the same as in the previous posture's item 3.
[Note: This is similar to the swinging fists in the Taiji posture 12, "Feet together; step forward, deflect, parry, and punch.]

(b) When doing left yielding stance with left bracing palm, it is the same as in part (a), only with left and right reversed.
2. Use or Application:
If the opponent comes in with a strike from the front, I use one hand to pluck [yank] and grab the opponent's hand, pulling it straight [back to the waist]. I use the other palm to strike with a bracing palm to the opponent's upper [body] section.

3. Essential points:
The punching hand and step up must be coordinated as one movement. The rest of the essential points the same as in the previous posture's item 3.
[Note: The phrase "the wrist is square" literally translates to "wrist four level". I don't know if there is a deeper meaning to it. There is a horse stance called a "four square" stance that uses the characters for "four" and "level", but I think here it just means that the fist's face, eye, wheel and wrist joint form a square.]
