14. Peeling Off a Layer of Skin
These years filled me with energy, and when I was filled, I was ready for the hardest and most dangerous work.
In the 19th year of the Republic [~1930], I was appointed by the Central Government to be the chief special agent officer of the West Road in Henan Province. I was to lead the comrades in Henan Province, coordinate with the military plan on the front line, and take counter-insurgency activities behind the enemy lines. During nearly one year of fighting against the enemy, I worked tirelessly, risked my life, endured untold hardships, and devoted myself to serve the country. By the end of the war, I was praised by the Central Government and was able to [finally] relax my duties and responsibilities. I slept in a bed for three days, and began to wash a year’s worth of dust that was accumulated. However, it peeled off a layer of skin, and I could then clearly see how hard it had been to accomplish the tasks [of the previous year].
