Translation Forum 2019

Humanistic Buddhist Texts in Translation: standards, theory and practice

January 12 - 15, 2019

Background

This Forum is for experienced Fo Guang Shan translators to standardize their outputs across various ongoing projects e.g. Fo Guang Dictionary of Buddhism, Humanistic Buddhism Journal Translation, Works by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, book publications and ad hoc temple-specific translations. Several departments in Taiwan have been involved in Chinese-English translation activities in Fo Guang Shan: Buddha’s Light Publishing, Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism - Centre for International Affairs (FGSIHB - CIA), Humanistic Buddhism Centre (NTI), International group (Buddha Museum), International Translation Centre, and various temples.

Objectives

This Forum will be divided into two parts:

  1. Standardization: Glossary building, style guide, tools, workflow, and workshops for special projects.
  2. Theory and practice: Modern day translation procedures adapted from ancient Buddhist translation court procedures, use of computer technology, and also the means to properly understand canonical texts and express them in the English Buddhist language.

The goal of this Forum is for greater alignment in the translation of academic and popular materials in Humanistic Buddhism.
