Jane P. Johnson was a political science graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and went on to obtain her lifetime teaching credential. She took a hiatus from teaching following the blessing of her children, Brian and Todd. When she learned that the boys had Dyslexia, her energies were devoted to helping them get a good education by improving the school system in any way she could. She served as a classroom volunteer, in the parents association, campaigns for the school board and on school oversight committees.
Driven by her acute sense of need for improvement of the education of those with learning differences, she was an ardent participator in the Dyslexia Association. She joined the Board of the San Diego Council on Literacy, and shortly thereafter took over as its President. Jane also served on advisory boards to the Department of Education at SDSU and USD with the goal of helping teachers with the broad range of their students.
In 2005 Jane lost her battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease, but not without leaving a lasting impression on all that knew her. Just as her passion made a positive impact while she was alive, Jane continued to change the lives of children she never met through “Jane’s Rooms” in which children with medical and physical disabilities were given a chance to learn and have fun in Multi-Sensory Rooms! Now, Jane's legacy lives on through "Transitioning with Technology," as her fund provides adults with disabilities the technology and equipment needed to communicate and access all that life has to offer.
The members of the Jane Johnson Fund are honored to continue to work in reflection of Jane’s love of children and the community.
