The transition between primary school and secondary school is an extremely important milestone which we take very seriously. We recognise that starting a new school is not easy and it can be quite a daunting experience. It is our priority to ensure that any new students joining Challney High School for Boys feel supported and are able to succeed. We run a well established transition programme for our future year 7 students, developed through strong links with our partner primary schools.
Below we have answered some of our more common Frequently Asked Questions about the transition process. If there is anything else you'd like to know, please email: transition2024@challneyboys.co.uk or alternatively fill out the form below and we will get back to you shortly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my son visit the school for a Transition Day?
We are planning on hosting our annual Transition Day(s) in the Summer Term but we are following the latest advice from the Government on safe working practices for schools, in light of the current pandemic. We will update you as the academic year progresses on our Transition Day arrangements.
Will my son be in the same tutor group as his friends?
We have students joining us from a large number of different primary schools. We aim to ensure there is at least one other student from the same primary school as your son to help him settle into life at Challney High School for Boys.
My son has additional needs. What extra support will he get?
Inclusion is a core value at Challney High School for Boys and we have very high expectations of all our students, whatever their additional needs. Our SENCO will meet with the SENCO of your son’s primary school to make sure that we understand your son’s individual needs and to plan for any support that needs to be put in place to allow your son to access a full and varied curriculum.
Will my son be able to take part in any clubs?
All students are encouraged and supported to take part in a wealth of opportunities, including sport, creative activities, cultural visits, outdoor learning experiences, work experience and opportunities to develop leadership skills. There are extra-curricular clubs running after school every night of the week.
Where will I be able to buy school uniform?
Our uniform suppliers are JS Sports who have a shop on Neville Road in Luton. You will be able to order uniform and the school PE kit through them. Please see our Uniform section on our Transition Hub and our Prospectus for more information on our school uniform requirements.
The school tie can only be purchased directly through the school. Your son will be able to purchase this on his first day of school at a cost of £4.
What equipment will my son need?
All students will need a strong backpack/school bag to carry books and their writing equipment. We will provide your son with a Personal Organiser for him to record any homework and any subject information. These must be brought into school every day, along with a reading book, pencil case and a scientific calculator.
We will have a pencil case with all of the equipment your child will need for his lessons on sale on the first day of school. The pencil case will contain 2 x writing pens, green pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, and a sharpener. You can purchase this as a ‘bundle deal’ with the school tie, for the total cost of £5.
What happens if my son is ill when he is at school?
If your son becomes unwell, he will be sent to the Medical room where our Medical Officer will assess how your son is. If required, a member of staff will call home for you to collect your son.
What happens if my son is absent from school?
Excellent attendance is key to a students’ success, both academically and socially. We expect all students to meet our minimum target for attendance of 95%. If your son is unwell, please contact the school as early as you can to let us know that he will not be coming in. Evidence must be provided should any medical appointments for your son take place during school hours. We work closely with the Luton Borough Council Education Welfare Officer to make sure that parents and carers fulfil their statutory obligation to send their child to school regularly.
How do I pay for school dinners?
Students will be set up with an account on our cashless system. This uses your child’s fingerprint to load money onto their account and pay for anything they purchase. You will also be able to top up their account online. Students who receive Free School Meals will continue to do so. Their account will be pre-loaded with the allocated amount daily.
Can my son bring a packed lunch to school?
Yes, your son can bring a healthy packed lunch to school if he wishes. We promote a healthy eating policy and it is important to make sure that no fizzy/energy drinks and unhealthy foods such as chocolate and crisps are brought into school.
How can I prepare my son for secondary school?
One of the key ways to prepare your child for transition is to develop their independence skills. This includes encouraging them to pack their own equipment ready for school or other activities, managing time and money, looking after their belongings and development of strategies to use if something goes wrong.
Who do I contact if I have any questions or if there are any problems?
You should contact your son’s form tutor in the first instance. The most effective ways of doing this is either by putting a note into your son’s Personal Organiser or sending an email direct to the relevant teacher who will then respond as soon as they can.
