Drawing from the rising tides of the Lakshadweep shores, Firoz’s work addresses the raw aspect of nature, where all is left bare to the elements. His work deals with the exploration of self and sexuality, toying with the paradox of the freedom of nature and the orthodoxy of culture. The overall image is unfiltered, raw, shocking even; but rightfully so as he mentions how his story with art began with such a difficult exploration into himself. Battling the societal gaze and the restraints placed upon him through his community, he chose to portray this struggle as an unfettered expression of his sexual identity (and so much more).
Finishing his BFA from the Govt. College of Kerala, Trivandrum, he has chosen to continue his studies in the same institution for an MFA in Painting.. Interestingly, he also works as an art director for Malayalam films and dramas, lending his talents to more than just one dimension of art. He has also worked as a festival art director for KNIFF 2019 - KAZHCHA NIV INDIE FILM FESTIVAL, where he designed and developed innovative eco-friendly exterior, making this multi-talented artist, a creative professional to watch out for.
‘If I'm asked what is the most free state of my existence, I'd say it is when I'm naked. I believe nudity has the power to unite mind and body. I come from a community that labels art as taboo, it was even harder for people to accept me when they found out that I was doing nude art. They were frustrated and their morality was hurt, which they later reflected on me in the form of isolation and curses.’
