Launched in 2024 by a group of dancers from Brussels, Paris and Geneva, the Armenian Folk Dance Network aims to promote Armenian Folk dances and songs in the European diaspora, and beyond.
Traditional dance plays a fundamental role for peoples as an expression of their cultural identity, history, and values. It helps preserve and transmit traditions that are at risk of disappearing in a changing world. Through dance, people assert their belonging to a group, strengthen social bonds, and often resist pressures of assimilation or marginalization.
For the Armenian nation, preserving traditional dances is crucial, as they are not only an artistic expression but also a vital connection to Armenia’s ancient history and cultural roots, and a living identity in motion.
Folk dances reflect the struggles, triumphs, and spirit of the Armenian people. By preserving and passing them on in both Armenia and the diaspora, Armenians ensure future generations can connect with their heritage and assert their cultural identity. In the current geopolitical context, where Armenia faces significant challenges, the preservation of these dances becomes an act of cultural resilience and national unity. In a world where many traditions are fading, keeping Armenian dance alive is key to asserting Armenia’s distinctiveness, strengthening national pride, and safeguarding cultural sovereignty.
- Preserve and transmit a threatened millennia-old heritage
- Promote Armenian Identity through the transmission of this heritage
- Foster continuous collaboration and exchange of teaching practices among group leaders
- Highlight the ethnographers of the past and present
- Build a sustainable worldwide network
- Reinforce our connections with Armenia
- Reaffirm our position on the international cultural heritage scene
Twice a year, Open European workshops combining ethnography and practice bring together the curious and passionate people to highlight our heritage. It is an opportunity to learn more about the origins of this millennia-old heritage as well as the national figures who fought to preserve them. And also to come together, sing with one voice, dance with one rhythm, and feel the vibrant energy of Armenian tradition.
Each edition follows the same structure: an ethnographic introduction, a song workshop, and a dance workshop. An aperitif concludes the official program, followed by free dancing.
