Evolution has the capability to salvage a dying population and threaten a thriving population, just as it did with the English Peppered Moth, therefore what would the result be if evolution occurred inadvertently? While that may seem unlikely, human intervention in nature has caused genetic changes in organisms such as the Velvetbean Caterpillar and possibly the Pygmy Right Whale. The tietering scales of what interference is necessary for human comprehension and what should simply be left alone for nature to handle must be considered by every individual in order to protect the stable equilibrium nature provides. Where might the line be drawn between detrimental and beneficial phenotypic plasticity and evolution in wild organisms?
With my research on evolution and phenotypic plasticity, I want to shine light on phenotypic and genotypic changes in nature and how said changes affect and are affected by humans. The main goal is to show the importance of dilligent interference as past irresponsibilities have had dire affects on the environment.
Human ineraction in the environment must remain limited, especially in terms of genetic study and manipulation. It is vital to human success to study and understand why organisms have certain adaptations, but comprehention of these traits isn't synonymous with disruption of an organism's genotype.
My name is Tracy Harrel and I am currently a senior magnet student at Chapin High School in El Paso, Texas. I graduate high school in June of 2023 and plan to attend the University of Arizona in fall of 2023 where I will pursue a bachelor's degree in Psychological Sciences. Psychological Sciences have been my passion for years as I spend much of my free time volunteering with the Texas Tech Health Sciences Psychiatry program. The remainder of my free time, however, is dedicated to more personal activities such as playing tennis, golfing, and spending time with my friends and family.
