PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH: Purpose of this study is to create a nationwide tackling proficiency database by evaluating video samples using the Standardized Assessment of Tackling Technique (SATT) which scores five critical elements of a safe tackle and was adapted from techniques in USA football coaching education. Screening actual tackling behavior prior to participation in full contact tackle football is a necessary step for reducing the risk of injury in the sport of football.
PROCEDURES: Study participants will be asked to complete a Tackling Proficiency Assessment drill while being video-recorded during three different practices during the season. Researchers will score each video on a 0-15 point scale using the Standardized Assessment of Tackling Technique (SATT) rubric. The SATT assesses five different components of a safe tackle on a 0 to 3 point scale. Composite scores of 7 or below will be shared with coaches so additional instruction can be provided .
RISKS OR DISCOMFORTS ANTICIPATED: There are no known risks to participating in this study beyond the traditional risk you assume by participating in your sport.
BENEFITS ANTICIPATED: Benefits of the study are more accurate assessment of tackling behaviors, quantifiable measures of skill development and better consistency in terminology, cues and developmental training interventions for players.
EXTENT OF CONFIDENTIALITY: All information will be de-identified and no names will be associated with submitted responses. A key with names and unique IDs will be stored in a separate encrypted (password protected) excel file.
COMPENSATION OR MEDICAL TREATMENT: There is no compensation or medical treatment associated with participation in this study.
*** Recognition of the voluntary status of participation is given upon completing contact info survey!!
