Dal romanzo (1988) di Roddy Doyle. Negli anni '80 un giovane proletario irlandese mette assieme un gruppo di musicisti soul (The Commitments, ossia le promesse) che nella Dublino degli U2 e di Sinead O'Connor cercano di uscire dal ghetto. Come la sofferenza nella vita puo diventare gioia nella musica. Un bel film. Giusto nella scelta e nella direzione degli attori, nel suggerire le spinte e i bisogni di liberta, democrazia e progresso di una generazione, nel ritmo del montaggio modellato sulle canzoni. Anche gli altri 2 romanzi della trilogia di R. Doyle sono stati adattati, entrambi con la regia di Stephen Frears: The Snapper (1993) e Due sulla strada (1996).
