The trial of former Volkswagen human resources executive Peter Hartz has ended on Friday, January 26. And the verdict? Hartz received a two-year suspended sentence and a fine. The bribery and corruption case of Peter Hartz was feasted on by journalists and camera teams with matching angry protesters outside the courthouse in the town of Braunschweig.
Peter Hartz was a former top manager of Volkswagen and a member of the IG Metall trade union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He was also a special advisor to Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD). He devised the draconian labor market reforms that bear his name. During the trial Peter Hartz was called with various names such as traitor, scoundrel and most of the angry protesters were shou ting for him to be put to jail.
Hartz trail was conducted in a rapid speed although he was charged with 44 criminal offenses; among them are bribery, undue influence and breach of fiduciary duty amounting to EUR2.6 million. His initial appearance inside the court only lasted an hour.
After a short deliberation, the chairman of the judges, Gerstin Dreyer , announced that the court has reached a prior agreement with all involved basing on the credible confession of Peter Hartz. He further declared that since Hartz has pleaded guilty on the charges and has confessed the whole truth, punishment would be reduced to a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of not less than EUR300,000. The said decision was ratified last Friday.
And lastly the Hartz case has become an eye opener to the German public especially since never in their wildest dream did they ever think that such a distinguished man like Peter Hartz that authored Germany's Labor reforms and who is renowned for hitting record breaking targets for exports year after year is involved in one of the country's biggest plunder ever.
Volkswagen has also made it clear that it does not want details of the corruption involving the long standing works council Chairman Klaus Volkert and the other 23 works council members to be aired in open court. Lots of questions are still unanswered. The German public would like to know what Volkert do in return for receiving the questioned "special bonuses" amounting to EUR1.9 million between the years 1995 to 2005. Another mind-boggling question is the payment of EUR399,000 to Volkert's Brazilian lover, what was it for?
Volkswagen is a 20th century icon and unparalleled in terms of its production of legendary cars and quality auto parts like Volkswagen brake hose. The Beetle which is an original masterpiece of the German automaker has become the world's best-selling car of all time. Volkswagen's bus was also branded as a symbol of generation while the Golf was deemed by many as a modern masterpiece. All the mentioned vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen have become an indelible part of the cultural and personal lives of millions of people around the world.
"It would have been quite interesting to discuss in the courtroom, or possibly later before the High Court, the question whether the alleged bribing of a works council boss harmed or benefited the enterprise. Perhaps the money paid was worth it. Since every day of industrial peace is worth a great deal of cash," wrote Hans Leyendecker in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Volkswagen was founded in an era where privilege is limited to a few number of people only. And this is exactly what motivates Ferdinand Porsche to come up with the idea of a people's car or Volkswagen in German. It was in the year 1934 when Porsche created the first people's car for Europe and a year later a working prototype was launched.
The scandal that happens in Volkswagen has resulted for the German public to doubt their country's post war system of corporate governance. The felt cheated and betrayed. They also began questioning the system's vulnerability to serious abuse. Under the system called codetermination, labor representatives are allowed by law to obtain half the seats on a company's supervisory board which in turn gives them the opportunity to control management decisions.
By the end of 1942, almost 70,000 Volkswagens were produced. Three years after in a swift recovery after the war, Volkswagen produced almost 2,000 vehicles for the Allied Forces and the new German Post Office. The year 1948 was another good year for Volkswagen; it was able to produce 25,000 Volkswagens from its production lines in Wolfsburg. Two Beetles were produced during this year and was shipped to United Sates. A year after another batch of Volkswagens was produced including Volkswagen Karrman convertible which became the best-selling convertible in the world.
As they say power corrupts. The system is not that perfect and so ending up being abused by those in power. Furthermore the chairman is also given an extra vote which gives him the power to tip the scales in votes resulting to the separation of labor and management. This type of system gives the shareholder representatives with the advantage especially in close boardroom battles.
The year 1955 has signaled the growth for Volkswagen since it was during this year that the automaker was able to produce a million Volkswagens. Since then it has grown into a world corporation, building factories and working communities in countries like United States, Brazil, and Canada. Volkswagen has not also forgotten to help its fellow countrymen; the German automaker has also put up working communities in major centres in Western Europe.
Volkswagen is making waves overseas. In Dubai, a circulating scam email stating that the recipient has won a huge cash prize plus a new car courtesy of Volkswagen has caused major confusion among people in the UAE. Volkswagen has already released an official statement saying that they have not sent any email containing such message. The German automaker has warned people in the UAE to be careful and not to easily believe such hoax email.
The scam email is believed to originate from Nigeria were scam artist abound. The scam email was believed by many people since it states there that it came from "The Lottery Department, Volkswagen Automobiles". Furthermore, according to the circulating fake emails, the recipient has been selected from more than two hundred fifty thousand email addresses. The winner is said to receive two million pounds or Dh14.4 million plus a Volkswagen car.
The scam email also provides what appears to be a UK telephone number which supposedly winners may contact to get their secret pin code from a Claim officer.
Volkswagen UK has already made a statement saying that the emails circulating in the UAE have no connection with their company and should be ignored at all cost. "Extensive enquiries have revealed this is an online scam originating from Nigeria," Volkswagen said.
The German automaker also stressed that the stated UK number found in the scam email is in fact routes to a Nigerian premium rate number. This means that people who are to call this number will end up with a heavily charged telephone bill. It is believed that it is through the bill from which the scam artist will received his part of the deal.
In other Volkswagen overseas news, in Kula Lumpur, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said that troubled carmaker Proton and largest German automaker Volkswagen AG are in negotiations but he refused to give details of the deal.
According to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in an interview with New Straits Times, 'I don't want to comment because it is being negotiated.'
Further reports last week say that Volkswagen has agreed to buy a controlling stake in Proton's manufacturing division. This news has had favorably affected Proton's shares which rose to 13.14pct Friday to 7.75 rgt.
The Malaysian government is under intense pressure to announce details of the said partnership between the losing Proton and Germany's giant Volkswagen. It should be noted that Proton last year lost its status as Malaysia's biggest selling carmaker to its rival Perodoa.
Aside from Volkswagen, Proton has also tried to negotiate with the US auto giant General Motors as well as with PSA Peugeot Citroen of France. There are also three Malaysian automotive firms that have expressed their interest in taking stakes in the company.
It is interesting to note that the Malaysian government owns 59 pct of Proton in addition to a 43 pct stake held by its investment arm Khazanah Nasional.
Volkswagen and Proton will release their official announcement on February 8, 2007.
Proton Holdings Berhad is short for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Malay for National Automobile Enterprise). It is Malaysia's first car manufacturer founded by former Malaysia Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in the year 1983. Proton is listed on the Bursa Malaysia.
Volkswagen means "peoples' car" in German. It is also considered an icon in the 20th century due to the large number of legendary cars it has produced. As a fact, the German automaker's record is unparalleled in the industry. It was Ferdinand Porsche who has conceived the idea of creating a "people's car". He wants to provide the German public at large with an affordable and quality transport.
However some historians say that it was Adolf Hitler that commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to build a small, inexpensive car. In the year 1934, Porsche has made his first ever masterpiece- a Beetle shaped-sedan that was called Volkswagen (German for people's car). The Beetle made its debut two years later. The war delayed the production of the vehicle until 1949. A year later the beetle shaped sedan became popular and was then known as the Volkswagen Beetle.
It can be a hassle looking for a new car, buying a house and even looking for a present for your friend's birthday. Scouring shops can take up so much time and as time seems precious these days, researching becomes all the more important. With over 76% of the UK population enabling their homes for Internet connections it is by far the quickest, easiest and most readily available resource. So here are a few tips that can help you with your online car searching.
It is so easy to surf the Internet at home whether it is in front of the TV, checking out the latest auctions at lunch, or having a quick look at local dealers before work. There are even apps now available by most companies on the iPhone or Android that can also help you with your new or used car research.
Preparation is the key. What is the purpose of the car you want to buy- for work, general, long journeys? Does colour matter, interior styling, radio? Do you want electric windows, air-con? What are the insurance brackets of the models you are looking at? How big does the car need to be? Doing a little research on models, makes and manufacturers and by having a checklist of the features you want will make the search easier in the long run.
Consider your budget. There is no point wasting time by looking at cars that you cannot afford, or that will cost too much to run with high insurance costs you struggle to cover. When working out your budget, think about how new the car really has to be. For example: give yourself a certain 'age range' to look at.
By this point you will have some kind of checklist and will have a better understanding of how you can work your budget. Now we need to know about the industry, is it a good time to buy that new Volkswagen Touareg, Scotland is too far for a visit, right? What is going on in the used car industry today? What are my current options for buying a used car? This research is important because you need to understand how to get the best possible deal and whether this is a good time for you. There are many automotive newsletters and online magazines that have up-to-date information and will be able to answer your questions, if not visit your local Volkswagen Richmond Hill dealer for advice.
Now, you have your checklist, you know it's a good time to buy and what your options are, it is time to start looking. There are auction websites, online car supermarkets, new and used car listings and much more online. Keep an eye out for anything that fits your needs, consider other options but if the car is over your budget and you are compromising on a few important features because of it, let it go. It wasn't meant to be.
When you find the Volkswagen cars you really want to view (that are within easy reach), make a bunch of appointments and don't settle on the local Volkswagen dealer, Aberdeen may seem like a good idea but if you live in Kent it may be a bit far. Ask for a couple of days grace once you have looked, go and see the final selection again if you need to and ensure you check each option out before making a final decision.
First thing you'll want to find out before buying that pre-owned car is whether or not you can afford the car insurance. Use online insurance quote generators to see how much the insurance is for that car you are interested in buying. I wouldn't shy away from your ideal car because it looks sporty and you think you'll need to sell your right arm and leg to get it insured. It's a frequent misconception that sporty cars are more expensive to insure.
Some used cars are incredibly affordable to buy, but they also tend to depreciate quicker than the last year's Apple iPhone model. You need to ensure that the used car you're acquiring will be worth something once you decide to resell it. Without having to look too hard, you'll encounter numerous services on the web which will tell you what second hand car models retain their values best. A good trick that works for me is to have a look at some earlier models of that very same car you intend on purchasing. For example, if the seven year old model of that same vehicle continues to be fetching a lot of money, then there's a good chance that the newer car model will also retain its value in the future. Take into account that pricey luxury vehicles are likely to age pretty poorly over time because of their complex mechanical components.
You won't need to search hard on Google to locate a boundless volume of research on virtually any used car. Just make sure you take a look at all of the online tools available to you for your car research. A quick online search may reveal frequent issues with used vehicles. Also, for those who have a certain car model on your mind, look up the web discussion forum for that vehicle for more information. Virtually every well-known car model has a committed fan page or message board for it.
This is big!! This is particularly a situation if you're not that mechanically inclined. However, if you find yourself to be a "petrol head", you'll find plenty of used, luxury autos in the classified sites that may appear attractive to you. Lots of luxury sports sedans have low resale values, making it easy to find affordable German built models at under a semester's worth of university tuition (i.e, below five grand such as the Volkswagen Jetta 1.8). The particularly tempting ones for me personally are the late 1990s BMWs which are wonderful vehicles to cruise around in. But don't let yourself be misled by the solid interior and the nice driving experience (young people frequently make this blunder). so don't be fooled because they are relatively inexpensive to acquire, because vehicle insurance can be really expensive on these. Finally, please be sure to double check the reliability rating for that car, prior to buying it. A situation you don't want is where buy a $4,000 vehicle, then have to spend an additional $4,000 just to make it road worthy.
Pay attention to this one! If you feel that the second hand car owner talks weird, is trying to tip toe around specific important details, or perhaps is trying to rush you into purchasing the car, it's likely good that there are probably problems with the car that he/she is not telling you about. In addition, make sure you check out how long the person has owned that vehicle for. You can check by buying a used Car Fax or a Car Proof statement online. These statements can be bought for cheap and it is definitely worth the small price you pay.
The reality is is that you are going to need to live with this used car for a couple of years. So please make sure that this really is gonna be "the" vehicle for you and that it will provide you with a pleasurable driving experience in the long run. If you choose to get a used car that's cost-effective and economical on gas consumption, you'll find your self content (but only if you're an Accountant)! In contrast, if you find yourself to be a car enthusiast (like myself), you are going to swiftly become bored of your car. So to conclude, this is my bottom line: if you buy a second hand vehicle, be sure that you are able to afford it and that it will make you smile every time you go for a drive!
Check the mechanics:
Take a professional mechanic along with you to test drive the camper van. He can tell you if the van is worth the buy or not. Ask him to inspect the engine, exterior and interior parts. Check for the safety features. Do not compromise on essential safety features. The perfect van should be fuel efficient, comfortable and safe.
Check the bodywork:
Check the ceilings and top of cupboards or wardrobes. Check if there are signs of dampness. Inspect the kitchen floors and bathroom area. If there is any leaking water system, the floors may tend to be soft indicating a corroded wooden support. Do check if the panels are budging out in a suspicious manner if any.
Check the fittings and fixtures:
Living area should be comfortable. Check if there are any extra features like a dining space, TV, armchairs etc. Check if the cupboards are easy to open and close. Look out for any repairs in any part of the van. Make a list of these repairs that need to be done. This will come in handy when negotiating the final price.
Camper vans come with a high price tag. Therefore it is best to go in for used camper vans. Used camper vans are much cheaper. Go to your nearest used car seller and have a look at the models they offer. Before buying you should check if the camper van meets your needs. Listed below are the points that you should look into while purchasing a used camper van.
Differentiate your wants and needs:
Selecting a used camper van can be very confusing. If you can use your friend's van for a few days then you can get a clearer picture of your perfect camper van. Camper vans should be selected according to your requirements and needs of your family. If you have a joint family or lot of friends then Class A camper vans would be your best choice. They are very spacious. But they are too big, so much so that it might be difficult to park and drive these vans. For a smaller family a small camper van is an ideal choice.
Read the Vehicle history:
Vehicle history can give show you what the vehicle can deliver for you. Used camper vans can be a headache if you choose the one that is worn out. Go through it thoroughly. Information regarding repair bills and spare parts receipts can be gathered. Also check on how many owners had the vehicle and tried it. Try contacting them to know their experience with the vehicle and if they had changed any parts. Ask them their rating for the vehicle. Obtain information regarding pick up speed, fuel efficiency and comfortability from them. This information can help you make a better choice.
Once people have owned a car, they often stick with the same make throughout their formative years. This is great if the person has no children, or they are just into sporty cars, but this will change as the family grows for sure. Beetles are loved vehicles by most people and there are obviously many used varieties on the market. For anyone who is looking to buy a beetle, try putting in 'Volkswagen New Jersey' or 'used VW NJ' into a search engine to see what is available in the area.
Of course, this company also makes other models and these are available in abundance. The cars keep their value since they are usually quite reliable vehicles and are much loved by families too. Finding one of the right size and year then becomes very important.
Because of the internet, this search is made so much easier because all of the wants and likes of the individual can be put into this search facility. Year, model number and any other needs in the vehicle will be added and then the list of available models can be printed out for a long look. Even photographs of the models available will be on the internet so colors can be looked at too. Although the color is not really that important, it is surprising how many people would not want a red car for instance. Apparently it has been proven that red cars have more accidents than any other color for some obscure reason and this puts people off.

So the model and make of car has been found, the outlet chosen, and the car that dreams are made of is there for the taking. But there are several other things to check out too. Does the outlet offer any special deals like low interest payments on the vehicle, or perhaps some free servicing over a number of years? All give added value to the end result and since this is usually a buyers market, the purchaser can even press for something extra.
Of course, it pays to find a local outlet which is well known in the area so that a good relationship can be built up. If the car is bought from this place, and always taken back for regular servicing and valet cleaning, then the outlet is more likely to give a good part exchange on the next vehicle being bought from there. This may sound like a small deal but considering the cost of new and used cars, even the saving of a few hundred dollars may make a difference.
Lastly, once someone has found a great outlet, who offers everything that they are looking for then they will obviously advertise the place to their friends and families who may also use the same venue. Therefore, it is imperative that these outlets treat their customers with the utmost respect while giving them the best possible deal every time they do business there. A good dealer will know this of course and play on these points to all its customers.
