Established in 1964 as a game reserve covering an area of 207 square kilometers, Katonga Wildlife Reserve was designated to facilitate migrant wildlife movement from Western Uganda towards Tanzania and Sudan. In the year 1996, following the merger between Game Department and Uganda National Parks that formed Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), it gained status as a Wildlife Reserve under UWA's management. Presently, Kibale Conservation Area administers the reserve with on-site leadership by a Warden In-Charge stationed at its headquarters located in Kikorogoto.
Access and location.
The Katonga Wildlife Reserve spans 207 square kilometers and is situated in both Kyenjojo and Kamwenge Districts. To reach the reserve, one must travel a distance of three hours from Kampala to Kyegegwa Town Council and then follow clearly marked signposts for an additional 42 km southward detour. It comprises a savannah grassland ecosystem.

The animal life
The Katonga Wetland System in the Katonga Wildlife Reserve is home to a thriving Sitatunga population, as well as a large number of waterbucks. Moreover, the reserve's hippopotamus and bird populations are on the rise along with primates.
During the 1960s, the reserve served as a habitat for various animals such as zebra, topi and eland. However, these species are no longer visible in this location. As of now, elephant buffalo waterbuck bushbuck reedbuck and sitatunga can still be found here. To replenish and enhance the animal populations for tourism purposes, a total of 60 Impalas and 5 Zebras were successfully relocated to the reserve in 2015. Presently, there are around 300 Impalas residing at the location while the bird catalog comprises over150 varieties specific to forests, wetlands, and savannahs. Several other mammals can also be found here such as Olive Baboon,River Otter,Uganda Kob,Bushbuck,Chevrotain Buffalo,Lepoard,Wateebuck,and Reedbuck; Black & White Colobus Monkey also inhabit this territory alongside various Repitiles ,Amphibians& butterflies.
