Key points:
• Three-dimensional enclosure with a pair of discrete heaters at bottom wall is studied.
• When heaters are placed nearer to the cold wall, irreversibility generation due to viscous effects is minimum for all Rayleigh numbers.
• A correlation has been developed to yield the maximum heat transfer for different source position.
