Having experimented with combining phenakistiscopes, flip-books, and other pre-cinematic image devices, using copying machines, videos and other contemporary technologies, I now began tackling larger-scale original art works. The first concept that came to mind was to use the video monitor as a strobing light source in place of the apertures in the zoetrope and phenakistiscope. In this work there are two motorized spinning cylinders. On each are (video printer output) sequences of my eyes and hands affixed in a spiralling pattern. By programming the computer to produce a regulated flashing sequence in a video monitor which illuminates these spinning cylinders, the sequences on them become animated. I entitled this work Time Stratum, because I imagined that if I could look into our three-dimensional world from the fourth-dimension, time would appear to overlap like zones, or stratify. I was awarded the 'High Technology Art Exhibition '85' (Gold Prize) for this work. (From the catalogue of the 1997 ICC solo exhibition)
