animated images on a spinning paper disk
A small device which uses an incremental motor, spinning as a clock does, demarcating seconds, to animate images depicted on 12cm paper disks. The disks are continually in an intermittence of spinning and stopping, spinning and stopping, and at extremely high speeds. In other words, they are repeating the movements of flip books and cinematography. By illustrating these paper disks according to the intermittences with which they will be animated, the works can be shown in regular lighting conditions, without the use of apertures or strobes. This work also offers a humble defiance to our existing image media, the televisions and computers with which we are limited to expressing our contemporary dilemmas.
■作品解説直径12cmの紙の円盤を、時計の針のように小刻みに回転するモーターを使って回転させ、円盤上の絵を動かして見せる小さな映像装置。円盤は、高速に回転しては止まり、また回転しては止まる、という間欠運動を繰り返す。つまり、フリップブックや映画のフィルムと同じ動きを繰り返すことになる。円盤上にこの間欠運動に合わせた動画を描いておけばスリットやストロボ光を使わずに、明るい光の下で絵を動かして見せることができるのである。またこの作品は、つねにテレビやコンピュータなどの既製の映像メディアを使ってしか、映像を表現できない現代のわれわれが持つジレンマに対する、ささやかな反抗でもある。
