Our undergraduates are being recognized for their contributions to Brooklyn College and the departments in which they work. Michel, Hermena and Mohamed have been awarded by the Chemistry Department for their dedication to the field. Navin has been chosen to receive awards by both the Chemistry and History Departments. Huda has won an award from the Biology Department and will be presenting her research to faculty, researchers, and students in the department.

Marcella is presenting a poster on her work in the laboratory at the 2018 Brooklyn College Science Day. It's a great opportunity for undergraduates doing research at Brooklyn College to display their hard work.

Our undergraduates are doing some great things! Huda was recently accepted to do research at both Rockefeller University and Harvard Medical School. Michel plans on working at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. Also, Navin was accepted to conduct work at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy.

After her rotation, Sam realized how great it was to work in our laboratory. She then signed up to join the Torrente Lab as a PhD student. She's stuck with us for another few years, at least.

Our research on the connection of neurodegenerative disease and histone post-translational modifications was recently published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience.

This year from December 2nd to December 6 in Philadelphia, the American Society of Cell Biology and the European Molecular Biology Organization held their annual forum. Mariana, Seth, and Marcella all presented individual posters on their research and did a fantastic job. Seth and Mariana also attended the Doorstop Meeting in cell biology of degeneration and repair in the nervous system. Lastly, Mariana got a travel award from the Minority Affair Committee to attend the conference.

Natalie Mendo was accepted into the New York City Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NYC-LSAMP). This is program has been at the forefront of a concerted effort to substantially increase the number of underrepresented minority students who enroll and graduate with baccalaureate degrees in STEM disciplines in CUNY. Congrats Natalie!

Mariana is one of a select few who as has been chosen to participate in the Future Research Leaders Conference (FRLC); it is career-development opportunity for talented early-career biomedical and behavioral scientists from diverse backgrounds. The next FRLC will take place within the annual NIH Research Festival in Maryland during September 2017.

Marcella and Mohamed both received awards from the Chemistry Department to work for the summer as undergraduate researchers. Marcella won the David Davidson Memorial Summer Research Award. Mohamed won the Chemistry Alumni Undergraduate Research Fund.

Brooklyn College held its 27th Annual Science Research Day for high school, undergraduate, and graduate researchers on the campus. It was an excellent time for presentation, discussion, and education on many topics that are studied at Brooklyn College, from biology, to chemistry, to psychology, and to environmental sciences. Huda, Marcella, Mohamed, Natalie, Navin, and Sadiqa all presented the projects that they were working on in the laboratory. Karen and Mariana both participated as judges for the day.

Seth Bennett, a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center, has joined the Torrente Laboratory in order to work on some of the lab's project as well as work towards his PhD in Biochemistry. We gladly welcome Seth to the laboratory as our newest member.

Undergraduate Research Assistant Steven Meltser has officially graduated from the Scholars Program at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Baccalaureate Program for Interdisciplinary Studies. We would like to congratulate Steven and wish him well!

Sadiqa won the Furman Fellows Scholarship as well as a scholarship from the Study Abroad Scholarship Association (SASA) in order to travel abroad to rural Inida. Sadiqa used the funding to examine anthropological ethnography and a global health model, as part of both her anthropology and pre-health studies.

Mariana was recently highlighted in the "From Potential to Action: NINDS Trainees Navigate Diverse Paths to Success" Project. This project seeks to highly outstanding neuroscientists who have used NINDS diversity programs to become successful researchers in their field.
