Runners Vs. Fighters
My newest book has a central theme, one you might have picked up on if you are following along on Instagram. It's this idea of runners and fighters, especially in the emotional realm.
One character in the book states that he believes everyone is one of the two- a runner, like our main character Taz, or a fighter, like... like... oh, let's say, the apostle Peter. You know, the man in the Bible who had a fiery temper and cut off an ear? Yeah, that guy.
So let's explore this idea a little. To determine if everyone in the world is one of these two things, we must first know what these two things are. And while I am no expert in the field of what makes people tick, here is my theory. You are welcome to agree or disagree.
Runners- they might appear closed off, withdrawn, suspicious. they shy away from deep relationships and things that might impact them emotionally, but in a scary way. They'd rather get through it themselves than risk trusting someone else, someone who, because they're human, might hurt them, intentionally or not. They're go-to reaction is to run.
Fighters- you know that one kid who was always throwing tantrums, screaming at the teacher, and throwing pencils? He's fighting for control the only way he knows how. He boils over at nothing, speaks with his fists, and bullies his peers. Underneath, he's hurting. But his go-to reaction is to fight.
These examples might be more on the extreme side, but I hope they help you see the difference. Now you're probably wondering: what am I?
Well, my first question would be, how do you want to react when a 'rut in road', so to speak, appears? If you heard a trusted friend was gossiping behind your back, what is your strongest internal response? You might have a mixed reaction, but are you more likely to spread lies about them in return, or quietly withdraw because your trust has been broken, and they no longer 'like' you.
Maybe some people are both, with different responses, depending on the situation. Like I said, I'm no psychologist, so I really don't know. Runners, fighters, both- it's all just a theory (albeit, one that kinda makes sense to me...)
So which are you? Because I think I know which one I am.
