GCSE English Literature - Curriculum Information

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

In Key Stage 4 students embark on a two year course in GCSE English Literature.

Students will study a syllabus from one of six examining boards. The names of the six examining boards in the UK (except Scotland) are:

  • AQA

  • CCEA

  • EDEXCEL

  • EDUQAS (Part of the WJEC examining group)

  • OCR

  • WJEC

If you or your child are taking GCSE English Literature, it is crucial to know which examining board and exam specifications your secondary school uses so that you or your child can prepare effectively for the exams. You should also check with the school which set texts you or your child will be studying. You can do this by either going to the school's website or by speaking to a relevant member of staff at the school.

Once you have confirmed the examination board and the specification details you then need to go to the examination board's website and find and download details of the examination to be taken. You can do this by clicking on the button below which will take you either to the correct page or to the page where you can download the document. By reading the specification details you will be able to familiarise yourself with what you or your child will be studying.

GCSE Grading System

A new GCSE grade structure has been introduced. It replaces the old model in which A* was the highest grade possible, with grade G considered as the lowest grade. The old GCSE system considered a grade C to be a "standard pass". To go on to further education, students had to achieve a grade C in GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language.

The new grading system places 9 as the highest grade possible to achieve with the lowest grade being a 1. A standard pass is considered to be a grade 4.

AS Level & A Level English Literature - Curriculum Information

  • AS Levels (Advanced Subsidiary Levels) are usually completed in Year 12.

  • A Levels (Advanced Levels) are usually completed in Years 12 & 13.
