Decide on your research topic for your graduate thesis (this step is not necessary, but it will help you to gauge your aptitude and fit with graduate-level research). 

You pick around 20 articles from top I/O journals such as JAP, OBHDP, or PPsych that are relevant to your interest. While you are reading those articles, you may find some other interesting topics or articles, you continue to explore those articles as they come. You will find yourself read about 50 articles and spent 1-2 months. You now will have "some" ideas on how your interested topics have been studied in I/O Psychology (e.g., what are the main approaches, theories, key findings, and practical interventions). You engage in brainstorming: "What are the IV/DV/processes that can uniquely contribute to the existing literature in the area?" Generate around 10 research ideas. Check if your research ideas have been already examined by the previous studies using library search. Well, it is normal to feel like a zombie at this point. However, you can do this! Your investment of 2 months at Step 2 will save your money and time wasted in the graduate program. By this time, you might have learned about your research topic and relevant I/O literature.
