Born and raised in Hong Kong and based in Helsinki, Finland, Ue Hang (Tony) Wong is an active composer and pianist composing and performing in a wide variety of styles. When it comes to composition, his recent contemporary works explores various temporal aspects, sonic interlocking, layering and scattering; all while integrating them into the contrapuntal and rhythmic richness he had developed over the past years in his style. His results often include fast temperaments and high energy level, and very much prefers elements to be ever-shifting and sometimes chaotic, but still somehow tangible as a complete and structured sonic world with intricate and intelligent underlying principles.
After becoming a composition student in 2023, his works became even more diversified, for instruments like the guitar, percussions, and even electronics, which helped them be featured in various events and festivals. Perofrmers include ensembles like defunensemble, Kumas Trio; and solo / duo ones such as Sampo Harju, Zimu Wang and Mantas Leonardo Lizzy. His latest project involves composing a more concept-based piece for the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and will be premiered around spring 2026.
As a performer, he has organised and performed his own concerts in Hong Kong for three years in a row and has mastered both classical and popular styles of music on the piano. As a pianist, he has also collaborated with other living composers, showing great versatility and ease to cooperate with. He is also capable of playing on the harpsichord, both as solo and continuo.
His diverse repertoire also reflects both his Eastern origins and his Western musical education. He is capable of interpreting many timeless classical masterpieces, having performed grueling works like Beethoven's Eroica Variations, and Bartok's Second Piano Concerto. He also steeped himself into more niche repertory, with his most recent endeavor being Szymanowski's Third Piano Sonata. On the popular music front, he can play most genres adequately, but is especially well-versed in playing anime and video game music, especially those from Japan and China, at a professional level, even playing his own arrangements of soundtracks from animes such as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and games such as Honkai Impact 3rd in a concert setting, and making similar arrangements for various ensemble types.
These are all not coincidences, but also thanks to various professors who cultivated and honed his skills on both ends during his studies in Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. In composition, he received tutelage under Lauri Kilpiö, Adam Vilagi, and Ville Raasakka; and in piano, under Juhani Lagerspetz and Hamsa Juris.
